Founded in 1972, Covenant House is the largest charity across the hemisphere serving homeless, trafficked and runaway youth. Located in 31 cities across 6 countries (Canada, the United States, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua) Covenant House offers a broad range of essential services to help youth move from poverty to opportunity and from homelessness to hope. These services include emergency shelter, transitional and supported housing, food, clothing, legal aid, medical care, educational services (including high school diploma programs and GED certificate programs), job training and placement services, childcare and parenting support programs.
Purpose of position:
The SVP of Finance/Accounting must be a thought leader in determining, driving and delivering the organization’s financial strategies and be a key participant in setting the organization’s overall strategic direction for growth
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Responsible for the preparation and reporting of financial and reporting of financial statements and budgets and comparing performance with operating plans for both the parent corporation and on a combined basis affiliates. Produce monthly financials on a timely basis (P&L for OPEX and Strategic Plan and Cash Flow).
- Responsible for the coordination and preparation of all financial reporting to management, the Board and governmental agencies.
- Monitor and Report on Five Year Long Term Plan for Operating and Capital Budgets and Long Term Cash Flow projections.
- Review detailed monthly reports on budgets to operating departments and act as advisor to managers to understand budget variances.
- Designs and presents transparent, understandable financial reports and data that meet the needs of a variety of constituencies.
- Work with development team to ensure that all Capital Campaign Donations and Budgets are being tracked and managed in accordance with annual plan targets.
- Oversee the month to month activity within the Frozen Defined Benefit Plan and determine what impact future interest rate movements and mortality tables may have on Sites and their liability and cash contributions necessary to keep the plan funded in accordance with IRS guidelines.
- Participate in Quarterly Pension Committee meetings and address issues related to both the frozen Defines Benefit Plan and existing 403(b) Defines Contribution Plan.
- Assist in preparation of 990s at Site level where necessary. Ensure that Sites are preparing documents in order to best represent their performance so that an accurate evaluation is performed by Charity Navigator.
- Direct, review and appraise the performance of finance department. Provide the necessary coordination between the activities of these units and the rest of the agency.
- Review and approve budgets proposals, operating and administrative policies and procedures from unit reporting directly to him/her.
- Assist and advise the Chief Financial Officer, Chief Development Officer and Chief Operating Officer on various matters including planning, formulation of overall agency policy, objectives and budget.
- Maintain corporate banking relationships, administer banking arrangements and loan agreements, disburse monies and securities as well as participate in the financial aspects of real estate transactions.
- Invest the agency’s funds as required and in conjunction with the Finance Committee and the Investment Committees of the Board and investment counsel, establish, coordinate and implement policies for investment of the pension, endowment and other similar funds.
- Manage relationships with the external audit firm and external internal audit partners.
- Coordinate external and government funding (when applicable) financial audits and take immediate action to achieve higher quality accounting standards where audit identified areas of improvement.
- Work with our insurance brokers to provide for insurance coverage for the parents and all affiliates.
- Work integrally with the other members of the Senior Management Team (consisting of the SVPs of the agency) to assure the smooth daily operations of the agency
- This position requires a Master’s degree in Finance or Accounting and/or be a CPA with ten years of professional experience or a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance/ Accounting and fifteen years of progressive managerial responsibility in an agency or organization of comparable size. Experience in non-profit finance is highly desirable.
- She/ he possesses a high degree of general administrative and management knowledge along specialized knowledge in finance, banking, nonprofit accounting, IRS, A.I.C.P.A and FASB regulations, auditing and data processing. Experience working directly with a Board is helpful.
