The Charter Schools Development Center (CSDC) provides experienced and expert technical assistance and resources to charter school developers, operators, charter-granting agencies, and policymakers, primarily in California. We support all charter schools in California, and nationally, with our knowledge and expertise in the areas of charter school leadership, finance, operations, governance, accountability, advocacy and development.

Our mission is to help public education change from a highly regulated, process-based system to one that allows and encourages schools to be more creative, performance-based centers of effective teaching and learning. We aim to achieve this by providing technical assistance to the charter school reform movement in California, nationally, and internationally.


Bachelor’s degree or equivalent. Familiarity with charter schools. Familiarity with membership programs and processes. Experience with email marketing programs, such as MailChimp. Experience using Salesforce or similar technology. Experience working with, updating and maintaining database information, including contact information, sales information, and other CRM data. Demonstrated experience researching and gathering data (online, phone, etc) and producing data reports. 

Experience in sales, marketing, public relations, or outreach. Experience with website management and social media marketing (for a business or other organization). Excellent writing skills, demonstrating a thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Demonstrated ability as an editor and copywriter for marketing and/or technical material. 

Experience establishing a customer-friendly atmosphere and interfacing with clients, including highly professional responses to incoming phone calls and emails (and redirecting as appropriate). Demonstrated experience in office procedures and use of office equipment, including computers and standard office equipment (fax, phone, photocopier). Expertise in the use of software applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Must be detail-oriented, organized, adaptable, and able to prioritize numerous tasks. Must have excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills (email, phone and in person). Must be able to take initiative, complete projects, meet deadlines, and work independently and as part of a team. Must be able to thrive in a small work environment.


Experience in charter schools. Experience with maintaining and developing a membership-based program. Experience with Salesforce-compatible applications such as Formstack and Cvent. Experience in graphic design and layout, preferably with the Adobe Creative Cloud (e.g. Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, etc.). Experience with in-person and online training and/or conference planning and implementation (experience with Blackboard preferred). 


Under the general supervision of the Director of Operations of CSDC, this position implements a variety of membership, database, marketing and office support tasks. This position receives periodic work direction from other staff at CSDC. Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Manages CSDC’s membership program. Specific duties include, but are not limited to: 1) developing, leading and continually improving CSDC’s membership program, renewal and new member onboarding process; 2) ensuring all member renewals are processed accurately and on-time; 3) completing the implementation of fully automated renewal, onboarding and other member processes; 4) generating renewal forms, and monitoring and tracking all membership renewal activity and communications between CSDC and member organizations; 5) following-up via email and phone to expiring and lapsed members; 6) tracking and documenting/reporting communication with members; 7) attentive listening to members’ needs in order to address concerns and help inform future changes to the program; 8) conceptualizing and implementing strategies for signing up new members; 9) preparing and presenting quarterly, monthly and weekly reports of membership program data to supervisor; and 10) problem-solving as appropriate to respond to membership issues and improvements.
  2. Coordinates and assists with all major communications and organization-wide marketing efforts across various media including website, email, social media, print and phone-based efforts. Continually expand and improve means by which CSDC communicates with members and non-members. Leverage and adapt to emerging technologies in order to ensure CSDC uses the most effective and efficient communication strategies, including website, email, social media, and other tools. Write, edit, and distribute various internal and external correspondence. Specific tasks may also include generating email/mailing/targeted lists, drafting marketing language, creating email templates, crafting videos or graphics for use on social media or website, and sending marketing emails and news articles (e.g. Charter Currents) using Salesforce and Mailchimp, or other systems.
  3. Manages regular (weekly, monthly, and annual) updates to and maintenance of CSDC’s contact lists. Specific duties include, but are not limited to: 1) identifying and implementing a complete annual calendar of database updates; 2) updating and maintaining contact and other information for all CSDC clients and associates to optimize CSDC’s ability to communicate with CA charter school leaders; 3) developing email lists and assisting with marketing efforts, including entering marketing leads into database; 4) tracking membership, sales, and other data; 5) assisting with database reports, customizations and issues as assigned; and 6) assisting with the facilitation of consulting projects to improve our Salesforce database and integration with other tools.
  4. Assists with website management as needed, making general updates, updating member access allowances and rules, interfacing with technical assistance experts, and continually assessing and providing feedback on the CSDC website to identify necessary improvements, including integration with other systems and the creation of new web-based tools and resources.
  5. Assists other staff with the research and copyediting of technical resources, articles marketing collateral, and other correspondence. Must be able to read, comprehend, and interpret charts, graphs, and various documents as well as hand-written correspondence.
  6. First point of contact for CSDC office. Answers basic phone and email inquires from charter school developers, administrators, operators, service providers, and grantors. Determines the nature of each call/email and either responds or refers to the appropriate person. Listens and responds to clients clearly and professionally both over the phone and in-person.
  7. Coordinates other office projects, including office upgrades and maintenance, vendor management and communications, and general upkeep.
  8. Assists with graphic layout needs as assigned, including developing marketing brochures and workshop and conference promotional materials and editing/drafting for our online publication, Charter Currents.
  9. Assists with CSDC’s leadership trainings, workshops, conferences, and events. Specific duties include, but are not limited to: 1) pre-event planning and coordination; 2) registering participants and confirming payments; 3) preparing workshop material; 4) arranging presentation space, food, and accommodations; 5) on-site registration and assistance; and 6) post-event wrap-up.
  10. Acts as an assistant to the Executive Director and other senior CSDC staff, assisting with 1) planning, arranging, and scheduling meetings, 2) responding to phone and email inquiries; 3) performing basic research; 4) arranging travel; and 5) other tasks as needed
  11. Performs general office duties and operations such as faxing, mailing, photocopying, typing, arranging staff travel, maintaining paper and electronic files, and maintaining office supplies.
  12. Occasional travel required to provide support during workshops and other functions.
  13. Occasional moderate lifting.
  14. Other duties as assigned.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: The position is located at CSDC’s main office in Sacramento. This is an at-will, non-exempt, full-time, benefited position. Continued employment in this position is dependent upon funding and the mutual consent of CSDC and the employee, and either CSDC or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.
