Young Playwrights’ Theater (YPT), seeks two (2) Resident Teaching Artists to join our team as part-time (20 hours weekly) employees, with full benefits. Resident Teaching Artists will facilitate YPT’s playwriting and storytelling programs for elementary, middle, and high school students, as well as adults.

Founded in 1995, YPT believes that creative expression and theater are valuable tools for the education, enrichment, and self-actualization of young people. Through our programs and productions, we fulfill their creative vision by hiring professional artists to guide and perform original youth-generated work for their peers and for the public. YPT believes that it is important that youth, especially those whose voices are often minimized, have access to high-quality arts education that centers their experience and is culturally competent and affirming for all young people involved. YPT believes that young people are inherently brilliant, and we exist to share that brilliance with the world.

In order to do this work, YPT acknowledges oppression and reduces its harm through our internal and external structures and practices. Aligned with our organizational values, we make decisions and implement projects through an anti-oppressive lens. We seek Resident Teaching Artists who share our organizational values and are passionate about arts education, storytelling, and applying antiracist and anti-oppressive principles to their teaching practice.

Each year, Young Playwrights’ Theater serves more than 500 students ages 8 and up with our responsive, customized In-School and Out-of-School Time Programs for youth ages, and our playwriting and storytelling programs for adults.

YPT programs are tailored for the needs and experiences of each community we serve; no two YPT programs look alike. We develop long-term, deep relationships with partner schools, educators, and peer organizations by developing programs to meet their immediate and rapidly changing needs. Through all our programs, we inspire students to realize the power of their voices through storytelling, playwriting, and arts advocacy.

In some programs, students write individual stories and see their plays brought to life by actors in their classrooms. In other programs, students create plays and stories as a group and bring one another’s words to life. Some programs are delivered digitally, through live video conferencing, or through flexible high-quality instructional videos and support materials. Other programs are delivered to both students and school professionals, supporting students in sharing their stories and supporting educators in integrating the arts into their daily teaching.

Our 2022 summer workshops and our 2022-23 school year workshops are expected to be in-person with strict COVID protocols in place.

The ideal candidate is an inspiring educator and facilitator, a strong communicator, a creative workshop-builder, and an organized planner. Resident Teaching Artists are responsible for transportation needs and for bringing their expertise to enhance YPT’s lessons (based on the students’ needs and interests). Experience working with youth is required, but you do not need experience as a playwright to apply.

All YPT employees are required to demonstrate proof of COVID-19 vaccination (two shots of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine, or one shot of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine), as well as proof of a booster shot if it has been six months since their second Moderna or Pfizer shot, or three months since their Johnson and Johnson shot. YPT Resident Teaching Artists are also required to pass a background check.

YPT is an equal opportunity employer. We do not discriminate against any employee or applicant for employment on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, gender, gender expression, sexual orientation, age, national origin, disability, genetic information, personal appearance, marital status, matriculation, or family responsibilities. YPT is committed to acknowledging oppression and reducing its harm through our organizational structure, policies, and practices, and we make decisions and implement projects through an anti-oppressive lens.
