Description

Blue Mountain Center (BMC) in Blue Mountain Lake, New York hosts four-week residencies for activists, writers, visual artists, filmmakers and composers. Located on Eagle Lake in the heart of the Adirondacks, BMC attracts residents from all over the world, many of them working on pressing social problems concerning human rights, environmental justice, economic justice, etc. BMC is community-oriented, recognizing the contribution of the individual to the collective, and providing many opportunities for staff and residents to get to know each other by eating meals together, going on excursions together, sharing work, etc. BMC also has a large garden from which a portion of our kitchen’s fresh produce comes.


In addition we host a series of conferences during the spring and fall months each year, serving as a resource for culturally based progressive movement building. These gatherings bring together individuals from a variety of disciplines to work on solutions to pressing issues such as prison injustice, climate change, labor rights, structural racism, voter participation, and much more.


BMC seeks a reliable cook + house manager to prepare relatively simple meals (2 dinners and 3 breakfasts a week) and oversee and perform inn keeping operations including light cleaning, bed making, and garden care. The cook + house manager will work with the head chef to plan meals and the program staff to coordinate inn keeping duties. The job extends through November 19th, with an opportunity to continue in May 2019 for the following season.


The BMC kitchen is a bright, open space. At times, the kitchen is shared among residential co-workers and guests, contributing to a sense of community around food. The meals are simple but varied, providing opportunity for creativity but not stress. Some cooking experience and comfort in the kitchen are necessary, but not necessarily professional cooking experience. Commitment: 32-40 hours/week

Compensation: $15/hour
