About Fresh Lifelines for Youth

Founded in 2000, Fresh Lifelines for Youth (FLY) is an award-winning nonprofit working to break the cycle of juvenile violence, crime, and incarceration. FLY believes that all our children deserve a chance to become more than their past mistakes. FLY’s legal education, leadership training, and mentoring programs motivate and equip youth to change the course of their lives. We are also committed to helping our juvenile justice systems become more just, humane, and equitable. As a result, FLY increases safety in our communities and decreases the costs and consequences of crime.

Description of the Law Program: The FLY Law Program is a 12-week course that combines law-related education, group mentoring, and prosocial & civic engagement activities to build youth’s personal power and inspire a community of volunteers to be advocates of a more just legal system. Staff and highly trained volunteers teach a fun, interactive course using our nationally recognized law-related education curriculum in high schools and community centers. The curriculum engages youth through the law and becomes a vehicle for us to teach critical life skills like self-awareness, social awareness, critical thinking, and self-advocacy. At some point in the program, youth take a field trip to a local university law school where they tour the campus and act out a mock trial in the moot courtroom. The course ends with a graduation ceremony where youth are recognized for their participation during the program.

Description of the Reentry Program: The FLY Reentry Program supports youth in transitioning back into their communities by combining law-related education, case management & coaching, and prosocial & civic engagement activities. Youth receive a modified law-related education curriculum along with pre-release case management while they are in custody. Once released, youth receive intensive 1:1 wraparound support in addition to being encouraged to participate in activities in the community. Throughout the program, staff help youth build social-emotional learning (SEL) skills including self-awareness, social awareness, critical thinking, and self-advocacy.
