This position is situated in the Professional Development Team, which is responsible for the planning and execution of a suite of professional development offerings to NASPA members. NASPA provides exceptional conferences, workshops, and symposia that educate and empower student affairs professionals to advance student success in higher education. It is with this frame that team members work, collaborating with colleagues across the Association to ensure NASPA’s initiatives have the greatest impact on our members and the student affairs profession.


About the Position 

The Assistant Director of Professional Development (ADPD) provides leadership, management, and support for the production and implementation of a select portfolio of educational conferences, volunteer management, and Association initiatives. The ADPD provides oversight for the development of learning content that is consistent with the mission, vision, and strategic goals of NASPA. Responsibilities for the position include working with volunteer members to develop and implement a portfolio of professional development offerings including, but not limited to: the Symposium on Military-Connected Students, the Assessment, Persistence, and Data Analytics Conference, The Leadership Educators Institute, and the Community Colleges Institute. The person in this role will work collaboratively with cross-departmental teams (such as meetings, marketing, and/or sponsorship) to drive project outcomes and team success. The ADPD will also support member volunteers as a staff liaison to committees and/or advisory boards to ensure that varied perspectives are considered in NASPA programs, publications, and initiatives. 


Essential Responsibilities

Professional Development and Event Management

  • Serve as the lead NASPA coordinator in the planning, implementation, and development of conferences, workshops, and symposia
  • Initiate and set goals for programs according to the strategic objectives of the Association
  • Devise evaluation strategies to monitor performance and determine needs for improvement
  • Write and edit all aspects of conference collateral to include event websites, digital and print marketing, and social media/blog postings in collaboration with marketing and communications team
  • Develop and reconcile program budgets while monitoring financial performance through forecasting and revenue projections
  • Ensure program operations and activities adhere to internal policies and processes
  • Guide cross-functional teams responsible for marketing, customer service, logistical support, and sponsorship solicitation
  • Communicate regularly with volunteer members, often including high-level executives and outside organizations, to develop impactful educational content delivery
  • Review hotel/venue logistics with meetings team to ensure program success
  • Assist in the planning and development of additional NASPA conferences, workshops, and institutes as needed
  • Support the NASPA Annual Conference through means such as, but not limited to: oversee a conference subcommittee, contribute to program review and selection, and onsite duties as assigned

Volunteer Management

  • Serve as liaison for assigned NASPA constituent groups
  • Facilitate leadership training and volunteer management for teams of volunteers across the country to generate content and engagement opportunities
  • Ensure volunteers are informed about the Association’s policies, procedures, and volunteer opportunities
  • Oversee volunteer conference planning committees to develop enriching content for conference portfolio
  • Act as a communications liaison to a NASPA Knowledge Community, ensuring members are connected, knowledgeable, and accountable
  • Serve as a primary resource for member inquiries related to portfolio of conferences and overall Association details.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree in educational background in student development, higher education administration, or leadership development is preferred.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to establish priorities, manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines;
  • At least two years of experience producing events, programs, or workshops is required. Experience at a membership association is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience with using technology to increase organization and productivity, including a strong ability to learn how to use new platforms;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required;
  • Proactive, highly motivated, and collaborative nature required;
  • Superior customer service skills are required.
  • One year of volunteer (subject matter experts) management experience is preferred.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships inside and outside the organization with members, vendors, building management, and colleagues;
  • Ability to speak conversational Spanish is highly desirable.


Employment Status

Full-time Exempt: Exempt employees by definition are exempt from overtime compensation requirements of the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, and are required to work as the job demands on a no time limit basis. 


Office Location/Working Conditions/Physical Requirements 

Office Location

This position may be based anywhere in the contiguous 48 states with access to a major airport within 2 hours. 

It is the employee’s responsibility to provide reliable internet capabilities for any work location outside of the Washington, D.C. office. As this position will primarily work on a computer, including phone, email, and video conferencing.

Please note, the NASPA Washington, D.C. Office is in partially-open status at this time, with all staff members who wish to spend time or work in the D.C. Office required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. You must be able to occasionally travel to the D.C. NASPA Office.

Travel

Moderate overnight travel to NASPA workshops is expected during which the position may be expected to complete set-up and stand for longer periods of time than usual, traveling by air and ground transportation. Locations vary and can include sites outside of taxi service from major airports. As a result, the position is required to have the ability to travel independently, including air travel, navigating ground transportation, and occasionally driving a rental car. 

Please note, NASPA staff members who need to travel on behalf of the Association are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Physical Requirements

This position is primarily office-based with primary work on a computer, including phone, email, and video conferencing.

Responsibilities frequently may require an adjusted work schedule, overtime, and evening/weekend hours in order to meet deadlines and support events and programs. 

This position will be required to routinely pack and unpack program materials for shipment, which will require pulling, pushing, lifting, and moving boxes weighing up to 50 pounds. 

This position will be required to coordinate on-site event execution, which may include moving furniture and other items, navigating event spaces, and communicating verbally with venue staff.
