Californians for Safety and Justice, a project of the Tides Center, is a statewide nonprofit advocacy organization that aims to replace over-incarceration with new safety priorities rooted in prevention and health. The organization is six years old with a strong track record achieving local and state policy change; advancing best practices in criminal justice; building coalitions with diverse stakeholders; engaging in high-impact communications; and elevating the voices of diverse crime survivors in the debate on public safety policy through our Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice (CSSJ) membership network.

We are hiring a full-time Events Manager to join a fast-paced team working to reform state criminal justice policy and transform the dialogue on crime, safety, and incarceration. We have staff in Oakland, Los Angeles and Sacramento and CSSJ members in five regions. Our events, held all over the state, are a vital tool for movement and coalition building, public education, and our advocacy campaigns. The Events Manager will work closely with the organization’s project directors and operations/development staff to execute events, including but not limited to convenings, coalition meetings, chapter meetings, conferences, trainings and meetings with stakeholders.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities  

  • Create and manage a master events calendar for CSJ as well as events protocols, events planning tools and communications tracking mechanisms related to events for staff and members.
  • Lead event planning and management of CSJ events, including managing and ensuring quality and effective execution of all logistics, timelines, run of show and tasks associated with events and ensuring events are executed in alignment with the organization’s vision, mission and values.
  • Ensure appropriate note taking and/or tracking of event outcomes, ROI, and follow up items, ensure timely evaluation of events and incorporate evaluations into adjusting planning or event execution moving forward.  
  • Support the organization’s directors and/or the development team in identifying event goals and needs, including graphic design/production/printing, logistics, and event marketing.
  • Maintain adequate supplies and equipment inventory and providing to Project Directors when requested.
  • Support collection of appropriate event-related data to assist in post-event evaluations and reporting
  • Active participation with the wider team to share knowledge, experience and with team-wide initiatives as needed.
  • With CSSJ, support the CSSJ project director and chapter coordinators in executing CSSJ chapter meetings and other local CSSJ events.
  • Negotiate contracts, costs, and services with vendors; book event space, arrange food and beverage, order all supplies/decorations, and coordinate audiovisual equipment and operation
  • Keep track of event finances including check requests, invoicing, and reporting and prepare and modify event contracts as needed.
  • Assist with preparing event budgets and provide periodic progress reports to directors for each event.
  • Work with operations team to manage staff/volunteers working at events.


  • 5+ years prior experience managing events.  Experience working in a nonprofit advocacy or campaign organization a plus.
  • Self-starter who is flexible, creative, able to work under pressure, and be able to work quickly and cooperatively on several efforts at one time.

Physical Demands

Must be able to sit and work at a computer for 6-8 hours, some light office lifting, travel mostly in California and the US.

Work Environment

Office Environment: Open seating and closed shared offices, fluorescent lighting, ADA accessible facilities, elevator.
