IRIS – Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services (www.irisct.org), a dynamic nonprofit organization in New Haven CT, has an opening for a part-time Legal Assistant. IRIS provides high quality and culturally sensitive assistance and representation to IRIS refugee clients who seek to become lawful permanent residents, naturalize to become U.S. citizens, and reunite with family members.  With our assistance, we help refugees establish new lives, regain hope, and contribute to the vitality of Connecticut’s communities.  IRIS currently serves clients from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eritrea, Cuba, and Sudan, among others.

General Description:  IRIS’s Immigration Legal Services (ILS) serves approximately 300 individuals annually. The Legal Assistant’s general responsibilities include: preparing green card and naturalization applications and family petitions in advance of attorneys’ meetings with clients, telephoning clients, scheduling meetings, processing mail, copying, completing USCIS forms, and general research.  The Legal Assistant supports IRIS’s attorneys (currently 2, may be 3 in the future), and reports to the Immigration Legal Services Director.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:  The Legal Assistant assists IRIS’s attorneys in processing USCIS applications, scheduling appointments, following up with clients, conducting general research, logging in telephone inquiries and mail, managing Excel spreadsheets for client case statistics and fee ledger, proofreading, editing, and other legal office support tasks. It is a part-time position: 15-25 hours/week, $13/hour. The Legal Assistant’s schedule must fall within the attorneys’ client meeting days which, at present time, are Monday - Thursday.  


Requirements: Candidates must have at least three years of relevant experience or educational background; strong writing, communication and organizational skills; computer skills including Microsoft Word and Excel; and ability to handle multiple demands and shifting priorities in a fast-paced environment. Candidates must have a demonstrated commitment to the mission of IRIS and awareness and sensitivity to multicultural issues.

Level of Language Proficiency

Candidates must be fluent in English. Proficiency in another language is desirable, especially Arabic, French, or Spanish.
