The Choice Program at UMBC provides mentoring and advocacy services to young people throughout the state of Maryland. We utilize a community-based, family-centered approach in order to promote quality, cost-effective outcomes for young people and their families. We engage in a collaborative process of service: where young people set goals for themselves and are held accountable by supportive adults along the way.

We are currently seeking two Service Coordinators to serve in our Intensive Advocacy program, which provides goal setting, mentoring, advocacy and barrier mitigation to young people referred from the Department of Juvenile Services.

Responsibilities:

As the Service Coordinator, you will oversee a team of three AmeriCorps Members serving with The Choice Program as they deliver quality services to youth and families referred from the Department of Juvenile Services. In this position, you will play a critical role in overseeing the excellence and consistency of services provided to program participants. This is a hands-on position, where you will also be expected to contribute via direct service, develop AmeriCorps Members and monitor reporting and relationships with our referral partner.

As with our other services, this position will put anti-racism into action through a focus on restorative practices, trauma-informed care and applied critical race theory. Collaboration is important in our organizational culture and is the cornerstone to ensure youth stay at the forefront of all we do.

Currently, this is a remote position, with all services, meetings, and activities taking place virtually until a return to in person services is officially approved considering the current pandemic.

Specific duties include:

  • supervising and developing AmeriCorps Members as they implement services for Choice Program youth. This includes coaching conversations, on-going performance feedback and mentoring through 1-on-1 meetings, team meetings and formal evaluations;
  • ensuring all program youth receive quality services which comply with standards set by The Choice Program. This includes overseeing service planning and goal-setting meetings, coordinating case management services to program youth and coordinating team schedules and planned youth activities or resource brokering;
  • providing direct service as needed;
  • facilitating an effective referral and intake process;
  • overseeing family-centered service planning;
  • serving as the primary representative to local community partners;
  • serving as an on-call supervisor for field staff (including some evenings and weekends) to consult, or intervene, when crises arise;
  • leading quality learning experiences for AmeriCorps members and other staff. This includes daily informal training, formalized classroom trainings and developing effective transition plans that successfully prepare new members of the Choice community to provide responsible quality services;
  • compiling and editing formal documentation of services;
  • and performing other duties as assigned.

NOTE: Two positions are available and both are located off campus. One position is available in Baltimore County and one in Montgomery County.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Requires a Bachelor's degree and six months experience providing direct care services to youth, families, or vulnerable populations. Position requires use of automobile and valid driver's license.

Physical Requirements: Light lifting and moving furniture, as well as carrying materials, to prepare spaces for training activities or events; Long periods of standing and walking, especially when facilitating activities; The ability to work remotely from home until further notice; Driving Choice youth and stakeholders in Choice vans in person, when face to face contact is deemed to be permissible and safe.

Note: Due to the nature of the work flow and level of responsibility, this individual maintains a flexible schedule which goes beyond a 40 hour work week. Evening and weekend work involved.

Preferred Qualifications:

Fluency in Spanish is highly preferred, specifically for our Montgomery Count position.

Background Screening Statement:

A background check will be required.
