This position reports to the Associate Director of Development and works closely with the Vice President of Philanthropy, Development Associate and other staff as an integral part of the team. The Development Manager helps Boston Harbor Now reach annual fundraising goals through the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of individuals, corporations, and foundation donors through direct mail, phone, and electronic communications. The ideal candidate will be highly organized, technologically savvy, an excellent communicator (verbal and written), an adept problem solver, and a team player with a passion for Boston Harbor and our region’s public open spaces.


This position will work in a hybrid model, part-time remote and part-time in the office located in Boston, MA.


Organizational Overview

Boston Harbor Now is a non-profit organization focused on equitable access, climate resiliency, and the Harbor's role in the health and economy of our region. As the legislated partner of the Boston Harbor Islands National and State Park and the City's partner for the Boston Harborwalk, we encourage people to explore Boston’s waterfront and Islands by promoting and hosting hundreds of free and low-cost recreational, cultural and social events. Boston Harbor Now partners with the City of Boston and waterfront communities to prepare for sea level rise, while promoting outstanding waterfront open space, and partners with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation to develop and advance a Boston Harbor-wide water transportation plan for expanded ferry service. Boston Harbor Now also supports investment and innovation in Boston’s working port to better support our 21st Century maritime economy. 


Boston Harbor Now’s vision is bold and requires a broad range of expertise, including planning, policy, business, operations, development, advocacy, communications, and programming. Current projects underway include: the redesign of Moakley Park, the City's largest waterfront park that will be a model for resilient park design serving some of those most in need of high quality recreation; the Stone Living Lab – focused on finding nature-based solutions to sea level rise; the redevelopment of Long Wharf as a climate resilient water transportation gateway to the Harbor; and enhancing the visitor experience through implementation of recommendations of the the Master Redevelopment Plan for Peddocks Island.

Roles and Responsibilities

This position encompasses three main areas of focus and responsibility:

Frontline fundraising

  • Working with the development team on moves management to identify, cultivate, and steward individual and corporate donors to secure gifts up to $5,000 and collaborate with Associate Director and Vice President on gifts over $5,000.
  • Working with the development team, secure sponsors for fundraising events and programs; provide annual philanthropic partnership offerings.
  • Assist with the identification, recruitment, cultivation, and recognition for fundraising participants for Event Host Committees to ensure event fundraising and recruitment goals are met. 
  • Regularly correspond with donors and potential donors while representing the organization in a professional manner


Planning and execution of development campaigns and events

  • Coordinate projects in an organized and timely manner including fundraising and donor appreciation events, and preparing materials for meetings and events
  • Plan, organize, fundraise, and execute two signature fundraising events, Spectacle on Spectacle and Onboard Awards and smaller donor events throughout the year
  • In partnership with development team, work with the communications team and program staff to develop various forms of fundraising collateral and templates for donor communications in email, social media, print, phone call scripts, and other forms
  • Draft email campaigns in MailChimp by formatting images, text, links, and the recipient list
  • Assist in creation, presentation, and follow-up of development presentations and other fundraising communications


Other

  • Maintain accurate records for donors, events, programs, and activities in collaboration with the Development Associate
  • Provide regular reports to share with senior leadership, board, and committees
  • Be knowledgeable about Boston Harbor Now’s programs and operations and maintain Boston Harbor Now’s excellent donor stewardship practices
  • Other duties as assigned


Qualifications and Experience

  • Training and professional experience in Salesforce Nonprofit Success Pack or other fundraising database preferred
  • Proficiency in Google Suite, including Gmail, Docs, Drive, and Calendar, to manage appointments, document sharing, and digital collaboration
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel preferred including vlookup function, filters, and formulas
  • Ability to maintain high level of donor confidentiality
  • Demonstrated skills in communicating effectively internally and with external donors, partners and/or similar stakeholders
  • Problem solving skills and ability to present possible solutions to supervisor
  • Prior fundraising experience in a job, internship, or volunteer role a plus
  • Bachelor's or Associate's degree preferred but not required. Other credentials, traditional and nontraditional, and experience considered and appreciated

Work Hours and Physical requirements

This position is based in downtown Boston. This position will work in a hybrid model, part-time remote and part-time in the office located in Boston, MA. Occasional travel in the Boston area and to the Boston Harbor Islands by ferry is required. May occasionally be required to shift their weekly schedule to work weekends or evenings, including outdoors at times.
