POSITION:  Executive Director

 

About the Abramson Scholarship Foundation

 

The Abramson Scholarship Foundation is a nonprofit organization that helps ensure that motivated District of Columbia public and public charter school graduates have the opportunity to attend college and the tools to succeed once they get there. Our program employs a two-fold approach to accomplish this. First, the Foundation provides critical financial assistance to students who might not be able to attend college without the Foundation’s help.  Second, and equally important, the Foundation provides Scholars with personal and professional guidance through individual mentors and programs in order to foster their academic success, emotional growth, and professional development. 

 

The Foundation was established as a continuing tribute to the memory of Frederick B. Abramson, a distinguished member of the Washington legal community who had a rich and varied legal career. Over the past 25 years, the Foundation has awarded over $1 million in scholarships to over 280 students. We currently support approximately 30 Scholars who are at various stages of their college experience.

 

Position Summary

 

The Executive Director (ED) has overall operational responsibility for the Foundation’s programs, expansion, and execution of its mission.  Specific job responsibilities include but are not limited to: foundation leadership and management, fundraising and communications, event and programsupportand execution, acting as a liaison to the Board of Directors, and fiscal management of the Foundation.  The ED is currently the Foundation’s only full-time staff position.  The ED reports directly to the Board of Directors and works closely with the Board President and Executive Committee. 


Duties and Responsibilities

 

Leadership and Management

  1. Actively engage and energize the Foundation’s volunteers, board members, Scholars, alumni, partnering organizations, and funders.
  2. Ensure ongoing programmatic excellence and consistent quality of finance and administration, fundraising, communications, and systems; recommend timelines and resources needed to achieve the strategic goals.
  3. Oversee compliance with legal regulations in all areas of the Foundation’s daily activities, including ensuring necessary forms are filed with the appropriate government agencies. 
  4. Foster development of short and long-term plans, policies, and guidelines.   

 

Fundraising and Communications

  1. Develop and maintain a donor base for both monetary and non-monetary resources.
  2. Maintain a donor tracking system (Salesforce).
  3. Proactively manage donor relationships and assist the Board in doing the same, including preparing and sending donor acknowledgment letters.
  4. Support Development and Communications Committees in creating, maintaining, and distributing fundraising and marketing materials.  
  5. Plan and execute the Foundation’s annual appeal campaign.
  6. Research and prepare grant proposals and other funding applications.
  7. Manage relationships with Foundation stakeholders, including Scholars, mentors, board members, funders, and supporters, as well as Scholars’ families, the media, and school counselors, teachers, and staff.
  8. Deepen and refine all aspects of communications—from web and social media presence to external relations—with the goal of engaging existing stakeholders and creating a stronger brand.
  9. Use external presence and relationships to garner new opportunities.

 

 

Programand Event Support

  1. In conjunction with the Volunteer Communications Coordinator and Mentoring Committee, maintain regular communications with Scholars, including outreach to: provide support and encouragement; identify issues and concerns and communicate the same to the Mentoring Committee; and confirm attendance at events. 
  2. With direction and support from the Mentoring Committee, plan, organize, and executeregular events for Scholars and Mentors, including (but not limited to) summer barbecue,Thanksgiving dinner,biannual care package events, and professional development workshops.  
  3. With direction and support from the Development Committee and Board, plan, organize, and execute fundraising events and activities.
  4. With direction and support from the Scholarship Committee, plan, coordinate, and manage the Scholar selection process, including administration ofthe submission,compilation, and review of student applications; organize new and continuing Scholar interviews; and plan an annual award reception.
  5. Manage the development of additional program content and leverage technology to engage Scholars in professional development programming throughout the year.

 

Board of Directors Liaison

  1. Provide weekly reports to the Executive Committee that communicate, in a timely, succinct, and accurate manner, all information necessary for the Committee and the Board to function properly and to make informed decisions. 
  2. Plan and coordinate quarterly Board meetings, including timely preparation and distribution of meeting agendas and related materials prior to meetings.
  3. Attend all Board meetings.
  4. Oversee implementation of all Board directives, policies, and procedures.
  5. Keep Board apprised of organization’s operations, changes, and problems.
  6. Monitor Board/Committee activities and serve on Committees as appropriate.


Fiscal Management

  1. Maintain the Foundation’s fiscal integrity and manage day-to-day fiscal operations, to include processing all bills and payments, reviewing bank statements, and collecting and recording donations. 
  2. Work with the Foundation’s financial consultant/bookkeeper and Finance and Audit Committee to prepare regular financial reports, including quarterly financial statements to be submitted to the Board, which accurately reflect the financial condition of the organization. 
  3. Submit monthly and quarterly financial reports to grantors (as required).
  4. Review and approve all financial statements and reports and documentation to substantiate those reports.
  5. Assist Finance and Audit Committee in developing annual budget for Board review and approval.

 

 QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree 
  • Passion for the Foundation’s mission, including an understanding of and demonstrated commitment to disadvantaged and underrepresented communities, preferably in higher education.
  • Relevant professional background with a minimum of five years of senior-level nonprofit management experience preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to anticipate organizational needs.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively and to manage multiple, ongoingprojects and competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Willingness to wear multiple hats and ability to maintain effective communications with the Board President and board members.
  • Tech savvy, with high proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint, and Word and ability (or willingness to learn) to work with internet-based tools such as Google Suite and Salesforce. 
  • Exceptional oral and written communication abilities and public speaking skills.
  • Significant experience in developing successful strategies and plans.
  • Aptitude for analytical thinking, capable of creative solutions to solve problems thoroughly and rapidly.
  • Understanding of nonprofit management, governance principles, and managerial best practices.
  • Successful resource development, fundraising, or philanthropy experience.
  • Solid, hands-on budget management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision-making, and reporting.
  • Ability to convey a vision of the Foundation’s strategic future to board members, volunteers, and donors.
  • Ability to collaborate with and motivate board members and other volunteers, and engage diverse volunteer and donor groups.
  • Availability to attend evening functions and occasional weekend events.
  • Willingness to work remotely.
  • Flexibility, strong work ethic, and a sense of humor. 

 

COMPENSATION:

 

Salary Range: Commensurate with experience.
