Multicultural Career Intern Program (MCIP) is seeking an exceptional Research Associate to join our Development Team. The position is responsible for supporting all aspects of cultivation and fundraising including data entry and management, gift processing, special events, fundraising appeals, and mail and e-mail communications. This role requires excellent written and verbal communication skills, and superb organization and attention to detail, as well as professionalism and discretion, initiative and resourcefulness, the ability to deftly multi-task, and a willingness to work on a wide variety of projects and tasks. This is an ideal position for someone interested in exploring many aspects of nonprofit fundraising and who can balance the core duties that are vital to the team’s functioning with more elevated projects related to events, external and internal communications and interaction, and others.

This year, MCIP will reach more than 2,000 “at-promise” students and families throughout the District of Columbia to support them in achieving their college and career goals.
- MCIP’s annual college scholarship awards has afforded hundreds of students from Bell Multicultural High School the opportunity of a college education. Now in its thirty-seventh year, this annual scholarship provides last dollar funding to bridge the gap between a student’s financial aid package and actual college costs. For DACA students, it can be the sole means of tuition support, because we believe that immigration status shouldn’t determine opportunity.
- MCIP’s year-round after school and summer program will work with a team of the very best certified DCPS instructors and youth enrichment paraprofessionals to provide 1,000 middle and high school students with high intensity tutoring, mentoring and family support services and academic enrichment services that complement the regular school day.
- MCIP’s Bell Teen Parent and Child Development Center has been providing exceptional childcare and parenting education services in Ward 1 since 1992. The Center is a nationally recognized and certified as a National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) accredited program. Accreditation is the highest form of recognition an early childhood program can attain and is an indication of a program that has undergone inspection of its facilities, educational practices, as well as policies and has been given a “high-quality” program rating.

You have outstanding communication skills, technically savvy and care deeply about empowering low-income, first-generation students of color to prepare for and succeed in college and their chosen careers. You are adept at understanding and conveying complexity, nuance, and enthusiasm. You are inquisitive, proactive, and have impeccable attention to detail. You have experience in building relationships, conveying impact through your writing, and making the case for investment and partnership. You enjoy playing a crucial role in a small, highly collaborative team, but are also comfortable working independently and taking ownership of your projects. We welcome candidates who have honed their writing , marketing and presentation skills in nonprofit development, communications, and/or marketing, as well as strong writers from other sectors who are quick learners and interested in applying those skills.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Fundraising and Development·
- Lead the preparation of high quality concept notes, letters of inquiry, and grant proposals and narrative reports for a variety of funders – tailoring your writing to suit major institutional foundations, government agencies, small family foundations, and in some instances, individual donors.
- Analyze Request for Proposals (RFP), prepare written RFP summaries for development team discussion, and lead meetings with program staff to discuss RFPs that are up for consideration.
- Provide ongoing prospect research and manage all fundraising timelines including grant and reporting deadlines, upcoming donor obligations and program site visits.
- Perform prospect research to support existing and new programs and create or update funder profiles and briefing materials, as necessary.
- Identify new prospective institutional donors and develop strategies to approach those donors.
- Cultivate relationships with funders.
- Plan and manage site visits for prospective and existing funders.
- Use a variety of sources to describe MCIP’s programs using culturally competent language that reflects the students we serve.
- Serve as the primary point person for donation processing. Responsible for updating, adding, and maintaining donor, volunteer and prospect constituent records in fundraising database, processing gifts, and maintaining files.
- Produce and coordinate cultivation, invitation, and fundraising mailings.
- Manage donation and event acknowledgement processes.
- Monitor and respond to phone and email inquiries regarding events and donations. Foster warm and positive interactions with donors, colleagues, and families.
- Complete additional tasks and responsibilities as needed
Aid in the coordination and execution of all MCIP’s cultivation events, communications, and activities.·
- Play an integral role in the planning and implementation of our annual scholarship awards gala.
- Sourcing and production of printed and e-materials
- Save-the-date and invitation mailing to ~2,000 contacts
- Guest list management and check-in at the event
- Production of detailed Activity Reports alerting the team and key stakeholders (Board members) of support they have raised from their networks.
- Back-end support in coordination of venue relations, on-site management, and technology portals and partners for event execution, as needed.
Communications and donor relations
- The Development Associate will oversee all social media channels for the organization, with an eye to increasing visibility across platforms and identifying innovative uses for social media.
- Oversee the critical and timely production and execution of donor acknowledgement letters to individual and institutional supporters.
- Assist with direct mail and online solicitations, as well as serve as lead production and dissemination of e-communications.
- Maintain organizational website, conducting monthly screenings for accuracy and relevancy and updating content frequently.
- Create and maintain event- and campaign specific websites and/or donation pages to facilitate donor-designated contributions and ticketed events
- Oversee all aspects of regularly scheduled donor-facing organizational communications, including correspondences on behalf of the Board, periodic direct mail appeals, and year-end campaigns.
- Manage organizational social media accounts
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Interest in fundraising, data, and events management.·
- Mastery of Microsoft Office is preferred. Proficiency with Mail Merge is a must.·
- Willingness to learn new computer skills and platforms as necessary.
- Familiarity with database systems is a plus.
- A strong understanding of web standards and best practices.
- Photography & Videography experience; video editing ability is a huge plus.
- Familiarity with professional social media engagement is a plus.·
