The Major Gifts Manager works closely with the Executive Director and leadership volunteers and reports to the Development Director, and will be responsible for implementing our major donor gift cultivation efforts and growing the high-end donor commitment to maintain Berkeley Humane’s life-saving programs.


Applicants for this position should have strong interpersonal and communication skills, along with the ability to prioritize and manage varying responsibilities. We are a small but dynamic organization and the pace can be surprisingly fast while at the same time personally rewarding.


Primary Responsibilities

-Manage systems and software to track and cultivate donors and prospects

-Manage a portfolio of top-tier donors and prospects through an individual Moves Management Plan;

-Establish solicitation priorities, manage prospect lists and research, and provide support to staff, board members and volunteers for solicitations;

-Work collaboratively with staff to cultivate identified institutional prospects and prepare foundation and corporate grant proposals

-Support leadership volunteer committees in planning VIP/donor cultivation events and activities

-Provide leadership, data entry, and training for Donor Perfect prospect management system.

-Provide high-level research on individuals, corporations, and foundations using a wide variety of biographical, organizational, and financial sources

-Ensure donor acknowledgement, stewardship and public recognition, as appropriate;

-Participate in solicitations as appropriate;



Required qualifications

-3+ years of professional experience in fundraising with a track record of success with specific experience in capital campaigns, individual giving, and/or major gifts, and the tracking/monitoring of pledges

-Proven success at securing major gift support.

-Computer fluency in MS Office, Excel, Donor Perfect or other donor database software, web applications, and knowledgeable about the role of technology and electronic communication in fundraising.

-Knowledge of local, statewide, and national philanthropic communities.

-Experience in scheduling and staffing solicitation calls and conducting follow up and stewardship.

-Superior verbal and written communication skills.

-Excellent interpersonal, analytical and organizational skills, capable of working effectively with board members, staff members, volunteers, consultants and donors/prospects.
