Position Overview

Peace Community Center is a nonprofit located in the Hilltop of Tacoma, WA, whose mission is rooted in faith. We support and encourage youth to cultivate their academic and leadership talents so they can gain full access to educational opportunities and reach their full potential. 

Quality engagement and strategic partnering are critical components of the organization and our work towards living out the mission and vision of Peace Community Center. The Family Engagement Coordinator is responsible for three organization efforts: supporting the facilitation of our parent engagement strategies across our k-12 programs, seeking out and maintaining connections with resources for use by our students and families, and spearheading a parent council project.  

Primary duties include coordinating a monthly parent gathering for the elementary and middle school programs in accordance with grant compliance, supporting high school programing with parent outreach efforts, ensuring methodical and updated documentation and relationships with social service organizations in support of family needs potentially impacting student performance.  

Primary Responsibilities 

Family Engagement and Resource Opportunity Coordination

 Identify resources and activities that connect and engage families in support of student learning

 Support relationship building that foster strong partnerships with community organizations and enhance the effectiveness of communication between families, program staff, and service providers  

 Serve as a liaison between families and service providers. This includes sitting in on introductory meetings, coaching families through phone calls when needed, and making referrals as needed

 Responsible for timely reporting of data to the following: Direct Supervisor, Managers, Development Team, and Executive Director

 Lead monthly family nights in compliance with grant funding—this includes learning opportunities, guest speakers, and organization features 

 Incorporate post surveys in order to measure quality of programming and drive decisions 

 Act as a resource to family-based initiatives including regular communication (phone, home visits, meetings, newsletters, etc.)

 Coordinate the meeting of a Parent Leadership Board scheduled to take place every other month

 Maintain notes for each meeting and surface proposals/feedback that come from the group

 Coordinate the annual welcome back orientation plan and schedule

 Manage transition communication with parents during critical transition years (5th and 8th grade years)

 During the summer, support with program recruitment and outreach to parents

 Participate in all staff and ongoing staff meetings

 Support development and fundraising activities, which includes but is not limited to providing student stories, connecting students/families with development team, participating in site visits, supporting and inviting people to fundraising activities

Experience and Qualifications

Successful candidates must be committed to the mission of Peace Community Center and have a passion for and commitment to the Hilltop community and the education of Hilltop children and youth. Candidate must demonstrate strong belief that all children and youth can learn and be successful contributors and leaders of their community and society. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and cultural competence. Strong candidates will be detail-oriented, approachable, and determined to learn organizational structures within the not for profit sector as well as K-12 and College & Career. 


Preferred experience:

• Minimum: BA Degree in related field (social work, education, human services, or related field) or 4+ years of professional experience in child and family engagement related fields

• Demonstrated commitment to racial equity:

o Experience working in racially and ethnically diverse environments

o Demonstrated commitment to understanding and dismantling racial inequities

o Desire to further understand institutional racism through data  

• Knowledgeable about Tacoma resources (basic needs, health services, employment, adult education)

• Strong personal initiative and independence 

• Ability to adapt to new and rapidly changing situations

• Ability to work collaboratively on a team

• Strong social emotional skills

• Excellent written communication

• Strong critical thinking and problem-solving that sustain and facilitate sound decisions

• The ability to demonstrate a friendly, courteous and professional manner while working with students and families, volunteers, external partners, school and Peace staff

• Skilled knowledge of Google Apps and/or Microsoft Office Suite
