PRIMARY OBJECTIVES:  To develop and implement the Alliance to End Hunger’s legislative strategies to increase food and nutrition security in the United States.


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES/ACTIVITIES: 

1. Serve as the primary advocate to Congress, the Administration, and the Alliance’s diverse membership on U.S. food security and nutrition policies, such as SNAP, WIC, School Meals and other federal programs.

2. Conduct research and analyze issues to develop policy.  Develop and present materials for a variety of audiences including advocacy, research, website, and policy documents as needed. 

3. Represent the Alliance at coalition meetings and build consensus in support of federal nutrition policies.     

4. Support the Alliance’s Domestic Advocacy Subcommittee and collaborate with other coalition partners to engage the Administration, Members of Congress, and other stakeholders on relevant policy proposals.

5. Supports Alliance’s communication efforts to uplift advocacy on Capitol Hill, the administration, and media.  

6. Increases engagement and advocacy on Alliance priorities among Alliance’s Hunger-Free Communities Network. 

7. Complete administrative requirements such as regular reporting, data management, timesheets, corporate credit card reports in an accurate and timely manner.

8. Performs other duties as assigned.


SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES/ACTIVITIES:  

1. Attends weekly supervision, departmental and other internal meetings.

2. Assist other teams as needed. (Membership, Communications, Development).


SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

Supervises interns and fellows as needed.


SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

• Master’s Degree in public policy, political science or related area preferred or the equivalent of two years’ relevant work experience.

• A successful track record (at least four years) in relevant policy, advocacy experience.   

• Detailed knowledge of U.S. food and nutrition programs affecting vulnerable communities.

• Demonstrated ability to create positive collaborative relationships with external target organizations; lead internal and external teams which require a high degree of diplomacy and judgment to address and resolve substantive conflicts or escalate concerns to executive leadership. 

• Strong written and oral communication skills, including ability to identify and engage target audiences and communicate complex ideas or issues tailored to the audience, using appropriate formats and media. 

• Strong public speaking skills; experience leading workshops and/or multi-stakeholder discussions required. Experience in utilizing and managing online communications tools.

• Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, including ability to conduct research and in-depth analysis of complex factors related to policy issues and to make data-driven recommendations and decisions.

• Experience working with diverse groups, including ability to reach across racial, ethnic, generational, socioeconomic, rural/urban and religious lines.

• Computer literacy in Microsoft Office, Internet searches, and constituent databases.

• A passion for ending hunger.

• Candidates must be authorized to legally work in the United States and be able to pass a background check.

WORK ENVIRONMENT ISSUES:  

Candidate must live in the Washington, DC metro area.  Attendance at various lobby visits on Capitol Hill and other meetings in Washington, DC will frequently be required.  Limited teleworking is available.
