Reel Works seek an accomplished DOCUMENTARY FILMMAKING INSTRUCTOR for our Fall Lab workshop.




The Lab Documentary Workshop, is the marquee program in our continuum of free after-school workshops that engage and challenge high school students to create a documentary film about their lives and communities. The seven-month intensive documentary filmmaking workshop matches Brooklyn teens from diverse communities one-on-one with professional filmmaker-mentors.  This unique combination of mentoring and documentary filmmaking has produced hundreds of short films that have been seen by over 12 million people worldwide. In 2007, The White House awarded Rel Works nation’s top honor for after school arts programming. Nearly half of Reel Works graduates make their careers in media.




The Documentary Filmmaking Instructor is supported by the Artistic Director, Teaching Assistant and three Youth-Mentors and reports to the Director of Education and Artistic Director.  Responsibilities include:



Curriculum & Lesson Plans - building on 15 years of experience, we invite all our teaching artists to customize the curriculum to his or her strengths and ideas to improve student experience and filmmaking outcomes.  Instructors are responsible for lesson plans which must be approved by the Director of Education.

Student Recruitment - Each fall and spring Reel Works receives up to 70 applicants for 12 spots.  The Documentary Filmmaking Instructor participates in interviewing and choosing each cohort to ensure that it is gender balanced and as diverse as possible.

Teaching - The Documentary Filmmaking Instructor and Student Teacher must lead an effective, engaging two-hour workshop twice a week that challenges each participant to conceive, plan, shoot, edit and present and original short documentary film that will be screened at HBO in April.

Assessment & Badging - The Documentary Filmmaking Instructor will use Reel Works original Media MKRS digital badging system to acknowledge student progress, encourage skill development and assess student learning and achievement.

Volunteer Recruitment & Management - Each student is paired 1:1 with a professional filmmaker-mentor.  The Documentary Filmmaking Instructor supports outreach and recruitment of volunteers; mentor selection and matching; weekly communication and ongoing support of mentors throughout the workshop.

Professional Development - Reel Works requires that all our teaching artists participate in our paid training program, Teaching Artist University which provides ongoing support and resources within a community of artist-instructors dedicated  continuous improvement

Qualifications


The Documentary Filmmaking Instructor must be a professional filmmaker with extensive documentary experience.

Experience teaching NYC teens.  

Adobe Premiere Editing

Most importantly, our instructors must engage, challenge and inspire young storytellers to achieve the excellence they are capable of.

A knowledge of the principles of youth development, a high degree of self-awareness, strong personal boundaries and the ability to ask for help are all essential skills.



Part Time - 15 Hours/Week - Oct 2018 - May 2018




Salary: This is a part time positions that does not include health benefits. $35-40/Hour commensurate with experience in filmmaking, technical skills, teaching and youth development.
