Job Title: WILL Development Associate

Reports to: President

Job Status: Part-time /Non-Exempt

Introduction

Wilderness, Leadership & Learning, Inc. (WILL) is a holistic 12-month experiential learning, youth leadership and life skills development program for District of Columbia youth from underserved neighborhoods. In 2003, WILL founder and President, Steve Abraham, inspired by his 2001 National Outdoor Leadership School program experience, left his law practice to establish a program to enhance the educational, leadership and life skills of DC high school youth. 2019-2020 is WILL’s 16th year providing quality positive youth development programming for District youth. WILL's mission is to provide diverse growth experiences and challenging learning opportunities to inspire and assist youth to make good decisions, become effective leaders, and achieve their goals.

Position Primary Function

The Development Associate will support various aspects of WILL fundraising. The Development Associate will work under the direction and supervision of WILL’s President, who will provide guidance on the scope of assignments and assistance as needed and/or requested. 

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Grant Development

·        Research potential funding opportunities to develop and grow foundation, corporate, and government funding to support and grow WILL organizationally and programatically. 

·        Monitor outstanding grants and manage deadlines and reporting requirements.

Donor Relations

  • Assist with the annual campaign, fundraising events, and other development campaigns and appeals.
  • Draft solicitation/thank you emails and letters, development reports, and marketing materials.
  • Manage and ensure accuracy of donor database (e.g. Little Green Lights).
  • Research, develop, and begin implementation of a plan to engage high net-worth, individuals.
  • Strategize with WILL’s President regarding the creation and management of a high-level donor program (e.g. WILL Ambassadors Program).
  • Research prospective donors and event sponsors.
  • Support WILL’s President in the completion of projects and work assignments as requested.

Fundraising Events

·        Maintain fundraising events calendar.

·        Support WILL’s President and the event chairs in the preparation for and day of event activities of the WILL Power Party, WILL’s signature annual fundraising event.

·        Design, plan, and implement a secondary fundraising event targeted to new audiences and donors.

  • Monitor donor sponsorships to ensure benefit and recognition requirements are met.

Fundraising Operations

  • Process donations by entering payments in donor management software, and preparing acknowledgment emails and letters and charitable donation receipts.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of the annual fundraising plan in accordance with budgeted goals.
  • In partnership with WILL’s President, assist WILL Board Members in the development of their individual annual fundraising plans.

Ideal Candidate:

The ideal candidate for this position will have:

·        2+ years of non-profit development/fundraising work or volunteer experience and/or 3+ years experience working with or serving on a non-profit Board.

·        An interest in a flexible work schedule while working for a high-impact organization in the community.

·        Commitment to the mission, values, goals, and success of WILL.

·        Strong desire to cultivate and execute enduring relationships with individual high-level donors.

·        Superior flexibility and adaptability.

·        Strong work ethic.

·        Demonstrated success working in a fastpaced environment.

·        Experience researching grant opportunities and grant writing.

·        Experience/expertise using various social media platforms, including Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Instagram to fundraise.

·        Knowledge and experience working with a CRM (preference given to experience with Little Green Light).

·        Proven administrative and writing abilities, with consummate attention to detail.

·        Proficient skills in Microsoft Word, Publisher, and Excel; Graphic design experience preferred.

Ability to: 

·        Communicate skillfully and effectively with diverse audiences both orally and in writing.

·        Be a self-starter, able to initiate and complete tasks, and to work both independently and collaboratively as a member of a team.

·        Keep accurate daily records of hours worked and tasks performed.

·        Develop and implement new initiatives.

·        Relate well with youth and adults.

·        Build strong interpersonal relationships.

·        Manage time efficiently and meet internal and external deadlines from several sources.
