ENVISION LEARNING PARTNERS: WHO WE ARE

Envision Learning Partners (ELP) is a nonprofit educational consulting service dedicated to helping schools and districts engage every one of their students in a high-quality system of performance assessment. Through a mix of district-leader coaching and school-based professional development, we help districts to refine their desired learning outcomes (often in the form of a graduate profile) and bring those outcomes to life through the design and implementation of high-quality performance assessments (often in the form of a portfolio-defense system). Together, we are a team working toward an educational system where assessment is for learning, not for sorting.

ELP is a subdivision of Envision Education, located in the San Francisco Bay Area. Envision operates three high schools and two middle schools whose organizing principle is high-quality performance assessment. A hallmark of Envision is our Portfolio & Defense system, which challenges our students at 8th, 10th, and 12th grades to curate evidence of their learning and to defend that portfolio of work before a panel. College persistence rates for Envision Schools' graduates—75% of whom are the first in their families to attend college—are significantly higher than the national averages for students of comparable demographics.

Envision Education has made an explicit commitment to becoming an exemplar network of schools with an instructional and cultural vision rooted in an anti-racist and pro-Black framework. We believe that targeted universalism—focusing on the needs of a group that has historically been marginalized—will support not only that group, but everyone, and that being explicitly anti-racist and pro-Black is essential to changing the status quo for all of our students.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Demand for ELP’s services is growing, and we need to hire our next Assessment Design Partner. We’re looking for a veteran educator who is

  • a top-notch designer and facilitator of adult professional learning,
  • practiced in the art and science of performance assessment, and
  • committed to a more just and student-centered future for public education.

Every Assessment Design Partner on the ELP team serves a body of clients—primarily public schools and districts—that have engaged ELP to help build or improve their performance assessment system. The Assessment Design Partner participates in collaborative design work with ELP colleagues but often delivers service on their own, virtually or in person. The ideal candidate values and draws energy from teamwork but also has the confidence, adaptability, and project management skills to provide service independently. Envision Learning Partners is headquartered in Oakland, California; however, this role may be done remotely from anywhere in the United States.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Facilitate Professional Learning: Lead in-person and virtual workshops on performance assessment to both clients and the wider public. Adapt workshops for various contexts. Gather and analyze feedback. Handle logistics of delivery.
  • Serve School and Districts: Provide performance assessment expertise to clients—school leaders and teachers—through ELP’s professional development and coaching model. Guide the design of performance assessment systems, customized for the client’s context. Create and implement a plan to build those systems with lasting capacity. Gather and evaluate data on effectiveness of client service and course-correct to meet client goals. Generate new client proposals (i.e., Scope of Work). Act as the primary contact person for client service delivery, follow-up, issue resolution, etc.
  • Design Professional Learning: Collaborate with ELP team members on always improving ELP’s professional development and coaching model.
  • Advance Our Mission: Participate in growing the movement for just and student-centered assessment. Contribute to relevant conferences. Promote High-Quality Performance Assessment (HQPA) through social media, blogging, etc.

The Assessment Design Partner must have:

  • Proven success creating and facilitating high quality professional learning to teachers and school leaders
  • Commitment to and experience in tackling equity issues with clients
  • Direct experience with the design and implementation of student performance assessments
  • Strong project and client management skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Passion for transforming the lives of students
  • A Bachelor’s degree

Ideally, our next Assessment Design Partner also has:

  • Multiple years of classroom teaching experience
  • School or district leadership experience
  • Disciplinary expertise in science (the current ELP team has a strong background in math and ELA; we would benefit from more science experience)
  • Expertise in project-based learning
  • Master’s Degree in Education, or related

Hours and work year:

This is a year-round, full-time position with three weeks of paid vacation.

Location:

Envision and ELP are based in Oakland, CA. Most of the team lives in the San Francisco Bay Area and, when not traveling, works virtually or at our office near downtown Oakland. A few of our team members are remote, and ELP is open to coaches working remotely from other parts of the country.

Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, the coaches traveled extensively depending on their portfolio of clients, typically two to three times per month, often out-of-state. As we move out of the pandemic we are still developing our strategy for serving clients both in person and virtually, but travel is still an expectation of the coaching position.

Compensation and benefits:

The starting salary range will be $100–110K, depending on experience. Strong benefits package offered, including medical, dental, vision, paid sick/vacation, optional 403b retirement savings, access to CalSTRS if a current member, life insurance, commuter check, and flexible benefits pre-tax deduction plans.

Hiring timeline:

Envision is accepting applications now through June, 2021. We are actively recruiting for a talented and diverse pool of applicants. We will invite select candidates to a video interview, which will include a demonstration of skills through a performance task. We hope to reach a decision by July 1, 2021. Start date is ideally shortly thereafter but is negotiable. Hiring is contingent upon successful completion of employment verification and hiring process.
