About Fresh Lifelines for Youth

Fresh Lifelines for Youth (FLY) is an award-winning nonprofit working to break the cycle of juvenile violence, crime, and incarceration. In twenty years of this work, FLY has supported tens of thousands of young people impacted by the justice system. FLY is at a critical juncture in our evolution: adding to a long history of success providing impactful intervention and prevention programs for young people, we understand that the pipeline-to-prison is a series of systems, structures and practices that suppress the ability of young people of color and other marginalized young people to thrive. We’ve set an audacious goal to do something about it: by 2030, through partnering with young people, communities, and systems, FLY will contribute to the fight for equity and justice by taking concrete steps to dismantle California’s pipeline to prison, equip 30,000 juvenile-justice and at-risk youth to transform their lives, and strengthen services for marginalized youth in California and beyond. Overview of the Leadership Training Program

The FLY Leadership Training Program is a ten-month program for youth who are interested and motivated to become changemakers in their communities. Youth are identified based on their needs for support particularly around education, legal advocacy, social support, and safety.

Program Components:

Wilderness Retreat: The Leadership Training Program begins with a three-day retreat that takes youth away from their everyday experiences and into nature to bond with their leadership cohort. Through various activities, youth engage in self-exploration, build foundational knowledge to set them up for program engagement, and start to form a FLY community with other youth and staff.

Fun Events and Service Learning: Throughout the program year, youth have opportunities to get together with their cohort and do fun things like go-karting, laser tag, and white-water rafting. At these events, youth get to practice prosocial skill building with the support of peers and staff. In addition, youth work together to identify social problems they care about and design and implement service learning projects where youth learn while also giving back to their communities.

Leadership Coaching: Leadership Training Program youth receive intensive one-on-one support from a FLY Case Manager who works with them to design a Leadership Development Plan focused on goals related to self-sufficiency, skill building, education, and career exploration.

Outcomes: The Leadership Program leads to decreased justice system involvement, increased educational attainment and increased social-emotional learning for youth in the program.
