Organization and Role

Thrive Scholars seeks a dynamic professional with comprehensive experience in the area of mental health and a passion for supporting low income, first-generation students and students of color in their college experience.

The mission of Thrive Scholars is for high-achieving, low-income, underrepresented students to get into and graduate from top colleges equipped to reach their full career potential. Through an intensive six-year program, Thrive Scholars provides students with college counseling and intensive academic preparation before college and a comprehensive set of academic, personal, social-emotional, financial, and career supports throughout college. This continuum of support directly addresses the unique barriers our students face in entering and succeeding at selective colleges and in competitive careers.

As Thrive Scholars’ newest College Success Manager (CSM), you will leverage your rapport-building and advising skills to provide tailored one-on-one coaching to our college Scholars so they thrive on campus, academically and personally, and graduate with great grades and ready for the career of their choice. In partnership with others on the College Success team, you will design and lead programming for Scholars focused on the knowledge, skills and mindsets needed for their sustained success. You will utilize your expertise in the area of mental health to serve as the content expert on our team in ensuring that programming effectively supports Scholars’ holistic wellbeing and meets Scholars’ unique mental health needs, and that Scholars are connected to relevant external mental health resources when needed.

Due to the ongoing COVID pandemic, Thrive Scholars has adapted our programming, including our typically in-person Summer Academy, to a fully virtual model. When it is safe to resume the in-person Summer Academy, the College Success Manager will support students at our Summer Academy in Los Angeles. If the College Success Manager is Boston-based, this will include an expectation of a minimum of 4 weeks of on-site presence in Los Angeles during the summer. When in-person programming resumes, during the year, there may be limited travel to college campuses of students in the CSM'S caseload.

The College Success Manager will report to the Director of College Success and will work closely with our existing College Success Manager.

 Key Responsibilities:

  • Individual Student Support (60%): Provide holistic, individual support to a caseload of Thrive Scholars in college, on areas of academic success (i.e. course selection, campus resources, self-advocacy) and socio-emotional success (i.e. campus culture, social integration, mental health and wellness). The Manager will be responsible for developing individual Scholar success plans and achieving key performance metrics. The support will take place in-person when geographically possible, and, more often, through in-depth video, phone and email exchanges. The College Success Manager will also provide support to volunteer mentors who are also working with students on the Manager’s caseload.

  • Program Design and Delivery with a focus on Mental Health (30%):
  • Support the development and implementation of the Thrive Scholars curriculum and programming, with a focus on mental health. This will include creation and execution of events, workshops, and online courses; production of lasting resources; and coordination of counseling services at Summer Academy. As the program team content expert in the area of mental health, the Manager will provide training, advising and support to all program teams (College Access, College Success, Career Development and Mentorship), ensuring that in individual caseload management and in programming, staff have the tools needed to effectively respond to Scholars’ mental health needs.
  • The CSM will also support program-wide community-building initiatives, including the Regional Director and cohort-based programming, led by others on the College Success team.

  • Program Support and Administration (10%):
  • The Manager will provide support across organizational departments as needed, meeting the demands for collaboration in a small organization and allowing for opportunities to learn across departments. These supports include, for example, supporting the planning and execution of Summer Academy logistics, and preparing program data for fundraising and marketing needs.

For a candidate with extensive relevant program and mental health experience, the position may be elevated to a Senior College Success Manager level.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Bachelor’s Degree with three or more years of professional experience required
  • Educational and/or professional experience in the field of mental health required
  • (i.e. graduate degree in mental health counseling or social work; professional experience in a mental health counseling setting)
  • Highly-skilled relationship builder who is able to build strong trusting relationships with college students, volunteer mentors, and other partners
  • Strong skills and experience with program design and execution
  • Effective public speaker and facilitator, with skills in creating and leading presentations and workshops
  • A passion for working with low-income young people of color, and expertise in the issues first-generation students face at selective colleges and in corporate settings
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to document and manage detailed data
  • Accountability for impact and an orientation towards results
  • Knowledge around, and understanding of, student experience at selective colleges

Knowing its importance to the success of our work, Thrive Scholars is committed to diversity and inclusion, and we aspire to build a diverse staff team and community. We strongly encourage people of all backgrounds to apply.
