Rockaway Waterfront Alliance (RWA) is seeking a proactive and enthusiastic educator to facilitate our 2018-19 Shore Corps Youth Leadership Program. Shore Corps is a service learning program for high-school students focused on civic engagement, environmental stewardship and leadership development.

Job Responsibilities

●     Lead Shore Corps classes twice weekly September 2018- June 2019- Tuesdays & Thursdays 4-6:30PM

●     Lead Shore Corps participants during some weekend for student-led community events.

●     Prepare lessons plans and materials for each class including: list of required materials, expected outcomes, and any media to be used

●     Organize all supplies and resources in advance of class sessions

●     Collaborate with Program Administrator on lessons/curricula, including field trips

●     Distribute pre- and post-assessments for all participants to complete

●     Assist in the recruitment of new students for RWA programming; help in the retention of existing students

●     Work with student participants on RWA conservation and restoration projects including: hydroponic garden, shoreline restoration and green infrastructure projects.

●     Lead outdoor recreational and environmental conservation activities including dune plantings, environmental science education, kayaking

●     Track attendance and behavior of all participants

●     Attend regular monthly or weekly meetings with the Program Administrator to review lessons/curriculum, progression toward meeting program goals, and any issues

Required Qualifications

●     Bachelor's Degree or presently working toward a degree in education, environmental studies/science, urban studies, or related field

●     Must work on-site at the RISE Center in Far Rockaway/ Arverne, NY

●     10-20 hours per week

●     Strong people, verbal, and written communication skills

●     Experience working with youth in some capacity

●     Ability to multitask

●     Ability to work independently

●     Excellent organizational and planning skills

●     Knowledge of or interest in: environmental studies/science, urban planning/design, youth development, and/or civic engagement

●     Willingness and enthusiasm for taking participants outdoors in a variety of terrains and weather

●     Sensitivity and experience working with ethnically diverse and underserved communities

Preferred Qualifications

●     Rockaway residency

●     Knowledge of Rockaway: its history and its ecosystem
