The East Somerville Main Streets (ESMS) board of directors is seeking a motivated, entrepreneurial, passionate, and community oriented Executive Director (ED) to partner with the Board in promoting East Somerville through the Main Streets program. The ED will be responsible for implementation of existing programs, as well as making recommendations for innovation in several areas where the organization is seeking to grow, including fundraising, community investment & communications, and small business technical assistance.

About ESMS: East Somerville Main Streets is a 501(c)(3) non-profit whose mission is to support locally owned small businesses, promote community engagement, and create events that celebrate the diversity of our neighborhood. This work is achieved by building a coalition of residents, local government, business- and property-owners and others who all have a stake in the vitality of our community.  Together we strengthen the role of East Somerville’s business districts as community and commercial centers and a unique cultural destination.

   Duties and Responsibilities:

·       Collaborate with the Board of Directors in creating and executing strategic planning, program development, and financial planning.  Work with the board president to plan board meetings, to ensure the board is well informed of organizational planning and activities, and to recruit and retain qualified board members.

·       Oversee fundraising planning and implementation.  This includes continuing to implement existing fundraising strategies and research new funding sources including potential grant funding.  You will be responsible for executing an annual budget developed with and approved by the Board of Directors.  ESMS is looking to diversify funding streams and build increased local support, and that is done with the Executive Director, and the assistance of the Fundraising Committee.

·       Represent East Somerville Main Streets. Ensure the organization (its mission and programs) are consistently presented in positive image and that ESMS has a voice on relevant happenings that intersect with our mission.

·       Planning and reporting.  Ability to map clear goals, plans and outcomes using input from the board and community, matched with an ability to articulate and/or enumerate, record and report program impact. 

·       Create and execute the organization’s communications strategy, including oversight of the maintenance of the website, and all electronic and print media (i.e. Social media, Newsletter, Posters & Flyers etc.). 

·       Build and maintain strong relationships with vendors, local businesses, and community, including the Board of Directors and volunteers, and various city departments, to help achieve the goals of the organization.

·       Outreach and promotion of events, including promotional materials and event listings.

·       Work with small business owners in growing and developing their businesses and with local property owners in improving their properties and finding business tenants that meet the needs of the neighborhood. The Executive Director works with the Board of Directors to support the small businesses and to provide hands on technical assistance.

·       Ability to develop the East Somerville Main Streets volunteer program, where our volunteers feel valued and acknowledged.

·       Hire, train and manage ESMS staff to execute programs that meet with the organizations mission.

 

Position Requirements: 

·       Passionate individual with the ability to build and motivate effective teams in order to fulfill initiatives.

·       Ability to provide excellent customer service to businesses, residents, and volunteers.

·       Excellence in organizational management, to set and achieve strategic objectives, and to ability to manage a budget.  Ability to manage multiple programs at once.

·       Experience in non-profit resource development or fundraising skills brought from another sector, innovative approaches on building maintaining new funding streams.

·       Strong written and verbal communication skills.  Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with others, both internally and externally, to achieve the goals of the organization.

·       Bachelor’s degree and 2+ years professional experience in one or more of the following areas: neighborhood commercial revitalization, small business development, economic development, community organizing, fundraising or another area with transferable skills. 4+ years of relevant experience can be substituted for a Bachelor’s degree.

·       Computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Microsoft Publisher, Constant Contact, and database management and Google Suites.

·       Experience with Social Media as a promotional tool (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram).

·       Ability to work effectively alone for much of the time, while effectively leading part-time staff members.  Previous management experience welcome.

·       Knowledge of East Somerville

·       Previous small business ownership or management experience

·       Bilingual - Spanish or Portuguese preferred, but not mandatory

ESMS offers excellent benefits as well as professional development support.
