BayLegal seeks an attorney with a strong commitment to public interest and social justice advocacy to join our Santa Clara County office. This position will involve stabilizing health, preventing loss of housing, and addressing inequality by helping low-income residents of Silicon Valley get or maintain income supports through access to public benefits programs, including CalWORKs, CalFresh, General Assistance, and eligibility for Social Security disability benefits, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), and the Cash Assistance Program for Immigrants (CAPI). This position provides an opportunity to further equity and economic justice in our communities by addressing a range of issues facing low-income individuals in accessing programs, including individual and systemic barriers. This position is based in our San José office, which is working primarily remotely through 2021. Some travel may be required for hearings and to all parts of the county as necessary to best serve our low-income clients. See our temporary COVID-19 Remote Work description below. This is a temporary position and is expected to last 9 months.
As an Economic Justice Staff Attorney, you will have the opportunity to:
COVID-19 remote work: BayLegal is committed to the health and safety of our staff, clients, and community. Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, most BayLegal employees remain primarily working remotely. BayLegal has implemented detailed health and safety protocols to minimize risk of exposure and has an evolving plan for expanding local receptions hours to the public and increased in-person activities in our offices and community-based advocacy sites. Employees are expected to reside in California and at a distance allowing them to commute to their physical BayLegal base location and service delivery locations as needed and in compliance with public health advisories.
While BayLegal remains primarily remote, all employees are issued BayLegal computers and provided appropriate supplies. BayLegal has implemented and continues to explore additional technologies to make working remotely as efficient and connected as possible. All employees receive a flat-rate monthly amount to reimburse for work-related use of personal IT equipment, including internet, and home. Due to the COVID-19 crisis and its impact on personal lives, BayLegal is open to providing flexibility regarding work schedules to the extent feasible for the position.
Compensation and Benefits: We offer a diverse, family friendly environment, and compensation based on competitive public interest salaries along with medical and dental benefits, paid holidays, and sick leave. Compensation is based on experience and competitive public interest salaries. The estimated annual salary range is $62,000 - $92,000 (placement in range determined primarily by years of related experience).
