The Arizona Political Organizer will assist the Arizona Political Manager with, coordination, and administration of the Arizona Green New Deal Coalition (AZ-GND) which includes: scheduling, agenda prep, calendaring, meeting minutes, working groups; assisting in the logistics of implementation of major events, online social media, communications, volunteer recruitment and assistance with other project management and oversight. 

 

The AZ Political Organizer has the skills and drive to help organize a strong, progressive, and durable base in the state. The position works with our Arizona team and coalition partners to implement an integrated organizing model that builds our base of activists, members, and leaders that become the state's largest political volunteer base and wins campaigns. WFP also believes that the most effective way to challenge organized capital is a strong coalition of organized labor and organized people. The Political Organizer plays a role in our base building efforts. This position also assists our Political Manager with our soft side political efforts including political action committee and independent expenditure committee campaigns.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Political, Electoral, and Lobbying (In coordination with the AZ Political Manager):
  • Assist with the candidate recruitment by conducting district and candidate research
  • Execute voter outreach programs, including door-to-door canvasses, phone banks, and text operations
  • Assist in paid field work implementation including writing scripts, cutting turf, and setting up phone banks, texting, and validator call operations
  • When legally compliant, work with endorsed candidates to ensure they are running strong campaigns


  • Assist in lobbying and elected official outreach (In coordination with AZ Political Manager and other AZ-WFP team members):
  • Ensure alignment of organizing objectives
  • When legally compliant, coordinate volunteer and paid voter outreach efforts
  • Assist with political/popular education training sessions and skills building workshops
  • Organize labor, community organizations, and grassroots support for priority candidate and policy campaigns
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with community members, coalition members and partners with the long term goal of helping uplift Working Families (or Progressive) Caucuses that contend for governing power


  • Organizing, Coalition Building, and Leadership Development (In coordination with other AZ-WFP team members):
  • Assist in developing target phone and text lists for volunteer recruitment (using EveryAction, Action Network, and Votivate or VAN)
  • Assist with volunteer training on voter outreach tactics and tech tools, legislative testimony, lobbying, and other campaign needs
  • Assist with recruiting campaign storytellers who can participate in the legislative process, actions, earned and paid media programs and as local leaders
  • To organize training workshops and political education sessions that develop the skills, knowledge, and analysis of our members
  • Assist with technical support to partner organizations on WFP mobilization tools (ThruTalk, Spoke, Action Network, etc.)


  • Cross Team Collaboration and Support
  • Assist with recruitment of members with compelling narratives around our campaigns and ensure all actions and messaging reinforce our brand and values
  • Participate in WFP Party Building efforts and activities including dues paying membership drives and fundraising events

Skills and Qualifications

  • Required:
  • At least 3 years of experience in political or social justice campaigns 
  • At least 1 year of experience leading volunteers
  • At least 1 year of experience in community or labor organizing
  • Ability to read and understand laws, policies, and legislative processes from municipal to federal levels
  • Strong analytical skills and sound political judgment
  • An energetic and strong commitment to progressive social change and racial, economic and environmental justice within an anti-oppression framework
  • Familiarity with Arizona’s political landscape and social justice ecosystem
  • Demonstration of a high level of project management including the ability to troubleshoot issues as they arise, make contingency plans, and shift plans as needed
  • Excellent verbal and written communication between multiple parties with grace and respect during challenging and aggressive timelines
  • Highly self-motivated and ability to manage multiple streams of work 
  • Willingness to work long and irregular hours, including nights/ weekends, depending on campaign needs
  • Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods in order to perform routine office tasks and staff events
  • Reliable transportation/ access to a car and valid driver’s license required (mileage reimbursed)
  • Intermediate computer skills, including GSuite (Gmail, Google Docs & Spreadsheets)
  • Advanced level of experience working with VAN, Votivate, or other voter file software
  • Experience with mobilization tools (ThruTalk, Spoke, Action Network, etc.)


  • Preferred:
  • Experience with social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.)
  • Ability to motivate and inspire others
  • Conflict resolution skills through a restorative justice and anti-oppression framework
  • Bilingual Spanish/ English strongly preferred

  • Compensation: The salary range for this position is $42,000 to $52,000. The final salary will be determined based on an internal equitable scale that takes into consideration years of experience, geographic location, and final job description.   • Location: The position is full-time and based anywhere in the state of Arizona during the current health crisis, with preference in Phoenix.

  • Union Affiliation: WFP is a unionized workplace. This is a nonmanagerial role eligible to join WFP's staff bargaining unit after six months of employment. WFP's union employees are represented by the New York Metropolitan Area Joint Board, Workers United union.
