Job Description:

The Bronx Coordinating Attorney position is an exciting opportunity with NYLAG’s Tenants’ Rights Unit (“TRU”) for a talented New York admitted attorney, with at least three years of post-graduation legal experience and one year representing tenants in Housing Court, to lead a growing project in the Bronx and represent Bronx residents facing housing legal issues. This project, with funding from the state, is flexible and allows us to represent Bronx clients in a broad range of housing-related legal matters with some flexibility on income. With the expansion of the Right to Counsel to cover Bronx tenants regardless of zip code in non-payment and holdover proceedings, this position will allow the successful applicant to take on a range of affirmative and administrative cases that are not covered proceedings under the Right to Counsel law, enabling the right candidate to expand and enhance their litigation and advocacy skills and address tenants’ legal housing issues in whatever context they arise. The Coordinating Attorney will supervise a paralegal and lay the groundwork for the possible expansion of this project, which may allow further advancement opportunities in TRU, which has an extremely committed, collegial, and hard-working team of nearly 50 staff attorneys, 12 paralegals, and nine supervisors.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Handle a full caseload of full representation Bronx housing matters in an array of different fora including Bronx Housing Court, Bronx Supreme Court, DHCR, NYCHA, and other administrative venues.
  •  Coordinate with NYLAG’s existing Bronx community partners and Bronx Right to Counsel providers to maintain, expand, and systematize existing client referral pipelines.
  • Supervise a paralegal that will provide intake, administrative, and benefits advocacy support.
  • Participate in client and community outreach initiatives and engage with state elected officials to demonstrate the value and impact of the project.
