ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF FOUNDATION RELATIONS:

Founded in 2001, the American Constitution Society (ACS) is the largest progressive legal organization in the country, with over 200 student and lawyer chapters across the nation. Our mission is to ensure that the U.S. Constitution is a force for  improving the lives of all people. ACS is:

·       Shaping national and local debate about constitutional law and our democracy.

·       Building the bench for the next generation of progressive lawyers, judges, policy experts, legislators, and academics.

·       Advocating for issues essential to our constitutional democracy, including voting rights, criminal legal reform, and anti-racism.


ACS is currently seeking an Associate Director of Foundation Relations who will play a key role in helping to raise an annual budget of approximately $7.2 million. The Associate Director will oversee the identification, cultivation, and reporting of private foundations. The Associate Director of Foundation Relations contributes significantly to the long-term financial sustainability of the organization and is an entrepreneurial position. We are looking for an exceptional writer who can articulate democracy issues and racial justice, and also provide superb stewardship, reporting and ongoing communications with our foundation donors while identifying and cultivating new, potential foundation donors.

This position can be based out of our Washington, D.C. headquarters (post-Pandemic) or remotely, depending on candidate and location. The Associate Director will be supported by a Development Associate and reports to the Vice President of Development and External Relations.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain the current foundation donor portfolio which represents the bulk of the organization’s funding sources.
  • Expand the base of foundation support (large and small) throughout the country.
  • Supervise and track grant deadlines, payment schedules, reporting and stewardship.
  •  Draft foundation proposals for grants large and small as well as grant reports. 

Leadership & Management

  • Work as a thought partner with the Vice President of Development and others on the team
  • Support the organization’s senior team with setting up foundation cultivation and check-in meetings. 
  • Supervise a Development Associate who will provide 85% time to supporting foundation fundraising and management.
  • Bring new ideas to areas of work; provide thought leadership to the department.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s Degree;
  • 6+ years plus in nonprofit fundraising;
  • Superb grant-writing skill ;
  • Ability to motivate and work well with a diverse team, including board members and donors.
  • Strong computer skills including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other Apps.
  • Proficient in donor database program Sales Force a plus.
  • Proven track record of meeting and exceeding goals.
  • Highly organized and able to prioritize big picture ideas and execute into tangible actions.
  • Ability to self-start, set goals, and objectives and report progress on those goals.
  • Ability to make decisions and provide input on development trends and best practices.
  • Detail-oriented, highly organized and strong project management skills.
  • Knowledge of progressive movement with a strong commitment to racial justice and social change.
  • Up to 20% travel out of state potentially (post-Pandemic).
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as occasional fundraising events require.
