POSITION SUMMARY 

The Associate Justice Director will work under the supervision of the Director of Public Policy and part of our policy and research team. The ideal candidate must be a high-energy, self-starter with multi-issue policy capacity and advocacy/government affairs experience. Candidates should have interest and experience crafting, analyzing and negotiating public policy solutions with working people, people of color, workers, and other vulnerable populations. Candidates must be able to thrive in a diverse environment of stakeholders including tenants, transit riders, grassroots leaders, labor, business, community-based organizations, advocacy and policy organizations, environmental organizations, and government representatives. While experience on policy, advocacy and/or research around housing and transit justice issues is preferred, candidates with background in policy advocacy with less issue specific experience will also be considered.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Lead public policy campaigns in areas of housing, transportation, land use. 
  • Provide policy analysis for organizational staff, leaders, and coalition members about key initiatives and campaigns moving at the local, regional, and state level. 
  • Develop and implement strategies to win support and/or partner with policymakers to advance progressive public policy reforms. 
  • Build and strengthen alliances with allied organizations and critical stakeholders to support our policy agenda, particularly in regional housing justice and transit policy. 
  • Conduct baseline demographic and economic research to inform organizational direction and campaign development. 
  • Monitor the political landscape for key opportunities to advance our agenda and campaigns. Conduct research and analysis to respond to changes in the environment. 
  • Work effectively with Policy and Organizing team members to coordinate strategies, identify opportunities and advance our policy agenda to build power for working people. 
  • Effectively represent the organization in local and regional coalitions, with policy makers, public and private sector partners, and with social justice allies. 
  • Write and edit documents and policy briefs associated with campaigns. 

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • At least 3 years of progressively responsible professional experience including working on policy analysis, policy advocacy and/or policy research, preferably including experience working with policymakers and coalitions.
  • Experience working on housing justice, planning, transportation, land-use or other policies from a labor, social justice, and/or equity perspective. 
  • Deep commitment to social and economic justice issues, as well as to building power for working families. 
  • Ability to work irregular hours including evenings and weekends. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse stakeholders. 
  • General knowledge of Silicon Valley/the South Bay and Bay Area as a region with specific knowledge of local communities a plus.
