HEAF is a comprehensive supplemental education and youth development organization that works to help motivated students develop the intellectual curiosity, academic ability, social values and personal resiliency they need to ensure success in school, career and life. HEAF identifies scholars in middle school and supports them until they are successfully admitted to four-year colleges through a variety of after-school, Saturday and summer educational and youth development programs.

Program Description:

  • Course is taught to 9th & 10th Graders from various NYC High Schools
  • Hourly wage based on License/experience

Job/Course Description:   College Quest, HEAF’s high school program, is looking for an English/Writing instructor for the fall 2018 semester that is knowledgeable in analytical writing.  This particular writing course only meets once a week, Saturday mornings, and is designed to provide academic enrichment to 9th and 10th graders as they prepare for the English Regents. This course is intended to assist students improve their overall writing skills by taking a focused approach on writing a thesis statement and a solid argument.  The Common Core English Regents exam has a writing component focused on developing an argument from various sources. Throughout the course students will critically analyze images, videos, music, news articles, and scholarly articles and provide a verbal persuasive argument, they will utilize the verbal argument to draft a written argument, which will lead to an introduction paragraph.  Aristotle’s “logos” principal of persuasion will be used to further explain the foundation and the parts of writing the argument. There will be some elements of debate, and public speaking skills.

Job Requirements:

  • B.A. in English, Education or related field (M.A. preferred)
  • NYC/NYS certification in ELA/ Social Studies or significantly experienced
  • Minimum of 3 years teaching experience in  middle school, high school or Community Based Organizations
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Impeccable classroom management skills
  • Willingness to promote HEAF educational and youth development philosophy
  • Ability to work collaboratively with the HEAF staff
  • Ability and willingness to commit to entire program
  • Ability and willingness to have FUN in the classroom
