CTJC is seeking an experienced, energetic, empathetic and transformational leader to serve as the organizations Executive Director. The ED is responsible for growing and managing a community center that responds to the healing and organizing priorities of survivors of police torture, their family members, and community members.
The Executive Director is responsible for the overall operations and management of the organization. This includes the implementation of the vision, mission and values; maintenance of high-level program and service quality; management of staff and resources; strategic planning; and execution of policy and protocol as established by the Board of Directors.
● Executive Leadership
○ Oversee strategic planning in support of the organization’s mission and goals.
○ Communicate effectively with the Board, the staff, survivors of police torture and their families.
○ Work collaboratively with the staff to oversee and manage the Center’s programs and services.
○ Develop and implement high quality programs focused on harm reduction, trauma-informed systems of care, healing justice, and other social service, supportive and/or community organizing programs driven by the needs of CTJC’s constituencies.
● Relationship development:
○ Engage current and potential collaborative partners in CTJC’s program of work (e.g. survivors, family members, organizers, community-based organizations, community stakeholders, community members, etc.).
○ Build support for the community center among and between survivors, family members, community members, community leaders, stakeholders, etc.
○ Attend relevant community meetings.
● Budget and fiscal management
○ Build support for the project with funders, government officials, and other external stakeholders.
○ Complete fundraising plan and complete successful grant applications.
○ Create and implement creative funding sustainability plan.
○ Develop the organization’s first comprehensive strategic plan.
1. Responsible for fiscal management that generally anticipates operating within the approved budget, ensures maximum resource utilization, and maintenance of the organization in a positive financial position.
2. Responsible for fundraising and developing other resources necessary to support the mission.
3. Knowledgeable in cost allocating budgeting practices and grant reporting for governmental and public/ private foundation sources of funding.
● Board Relationship
1. Work with the board of directors in order to fulfill the organization mission
2. Responsible for leading CTJC in a manner that supports and guides the organization’s mission as defined by the board of directors
3. Responsible for communicating effectively with board and providing, in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the board to function property and to make informed decisions.
Essential skills and experience:
● Must be able to build and maintain strong collaborative working relationships with survivors and their families.
● Bachelor’s degree in social work, social services, or related human services field from an accredited college or university; master’s degree in social work, social services, public health, or related human services field highly regarded or equivalent work experience for nonprofit management.
● Minimum 5 years of experience in management and leadership role(s) in a non-profit or healthcare organization.
● Experience working with and within African-American communities.
● Understanding of harm reduction, community-based organizing, and trauma-informed systems of care, healing justice, and social service delivery highly regarded.
● Proven success cultivating relationships with Board of Directors, staff, community groups, and other related agencies.
● Experience with fundraising and developing key donor relationships.
● Experience managing an annual budget of more than $500,000.
● Experience managing strategic planning and organizational development.
● Experience working with communities impacted by police violence.
● Experience in Mental or Behavioral Health preferred.
● Experience with Electronic Billing/Record Keeping Systems preferred.
● Experience in managing construction projects, working with contractors, or some knowledge of capital projects is desired.
● Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal skills.
● Familiarity with Chicago.
● Occasional evening and weekend hours required.
