Major Gift Officer Job Description

The Major Gifts Officer will play a critical role in meeting the organization's ambitious fundraising goals, and will have responsibility to cultivate, solicit and steward gifts from generous individual donors. This position works collaboratively and strategically with the Director of Major Gifts and the Senior Vice President of Development to build a pipeline of major donors, solicit/close major gifts and steward donors appropriately. The Major Gifts Officer will report to the Director of Major Gifts.


Duties and Responsibility

  • Cultivates and solicits assigned major gift prospects; ensures that donors receive proper acknowledgement, recognition, and stewardship.
  • Prepares written donor proposals for major gift solicitations, maintains correspondence with donors and appropriate financial personnel
  • Identifies potential major gift candidates
  • Prepares call reports in a timely manner
  • Attends management committee meetings; prospect review meetings; provides communication updates to management.
  • The Major Gifts Officer will complete and maintain current data tracking for entire prospect/donor portfolio. This includes timely completion of contact reports, updating prospect stages, next step tasks, and proposals.
  • Performs special projects and other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum five (5) years of development experience at a non-profit
  • Proven track record in achieving goals and fundraising metrics
  • Demonstrated knowledge of development/fundraising concepts and techniques.
  • Knowledge of planned giving and procedures.
  • Ability to solicit gifts.
  • Superior interpersonal/human relations skills.
  • Excellent communication and organization skills
  • Ability to cooperatively and effectively with donors, volunteers, and development staff
  • Maintains highest ethical standards consistent with fundraising professionals code of conduct
  • Self-starter; ability to work independently.
  • Ability to adapt and respond to various situations

  • Work independently while understanding the necessity for communicating and coordinating work efforts with other employees and organizations.
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Experience with fundraising database software and wealth screening software.
  • Team oriented, flexible, creative, positive, personable, and eager to learn.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business or related field of study
