UpStart is seeking a talented program designer, facilitator, and relationship-builder to help lead our New York-area program work. As a member of a multidisciplinary team, the Design Strategist, New York (DS-NY) will focus on supporting UpStart’s regional hub strategy, building a thriving local ecosystem of changemakers who are bringing something fresh and impactful to Jewish life. This includes support for local Jewish institutional leaders (“intrapreneurs”) to become effective change-agents at their organizations, as well as support for local entrepreneurs and ventures, including participants in our flagship UpStart Accelerator. The DS-NY will also be instrumental in facilitating local community and field-building events, with a particular focus on The Collaboratory in May 2019. The DS-NY will work closely with the development team on grant reporting needs, and alongside the brand strategy team to provide marketing outreach and content support.


The DS is a full-time exempt position based in NYC who reports to the Innovation Lead, Intrapreneurs & Field. The DS-NY will focus on local intrapreneur and field-based programs (60%), entrepreneurs & ventures (20%), and development, evaluation, and communications (20%).


Key Activities


Intrapreneurs & Field (60%)

  • Design and facilitate programs for local Jewish institutional leaders (“intrapreneurs”) to support them in becoming effective change agents in their organizations and communities.
  • Serve as the face of UpStart in the New York area. This includes building relationships with clients and partners (such as UJA, day schools, and synagogues), expanding UpStart’s local and regional network of qualified professional consultants, and connecting with current UpStarters and alumni.
  • Develop and present proposals for UpStart engagements with Jewish institutions.
  • Help support and facilitate our host committee and local event for the National Collaboratory, the largest annual gathering of Jewish community visionaries, activists, and catalyzers of change in North America.
  • Co-design and implement a curriculum to engage professionals and lay leaders in community-wide learning and networking opportunities.
  • Coordinate regional UpStart network events, resources, and showcase opportunities for entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs, including alumni.


Entrepreneurs & Ventures (20%)

  • Support regional recruitment efforts for UpStart’s National Accelerator, building a pipeline of New York-area Jewish nonprofit entrepreneurs who are enhancing the vitality of Jewish life
  • Provide local entrepreneurs with targeted coaching support in the core content areas relevant to running and growing successful programs and ventures.
  • Coordinate and facilitate local programs designed to support emerging Jewish social entrepreneurs to build a pipeline for the National Accelerator.


Marketing, Development, & Evaluation (20%)

  • Support UpStart’s Communications and Content Manager on New York-focused strategic marketing campaigns and outreach, such as regional email, website, and social media content.
  • Provide support for local fundraising efforts, including grant reporting, data collection, and identification and cultivation of potential donors.
  • Implement evaluation processes and synthesize findings to assess the effectiveness of local programs and inform future program design.


Skills & Attributes

  • A passion for creating positive change in the way Jewish life is lived.
  • Track record of success in planning and facilitating engaging educational programs.
  • Great networking chops and understanding of the New York Jewish ecosystem.
  • Experience in community outreach and managing community partnerships.
  • Excellent people, communication, time, and project management skills.
  • A self-starter and “intrapreneur,” with the ability to be resourceful, flexible, and positive in our entrepreneurial culture.
  • Committed to UpStart’s values of empathy, optimism, collaboration, and risk-taking.
  • Knowledge of human-centered design, entrepreneurship, and change leadership is desirable, but not required.
  • Experience in account management, consulting, or similar client-facing role is a plus.
