Salary Range: $60,000-$75,000 annual

Founded in 1910, HES provides a safe haven for homeless, abused, neglected and injured animals in our community. HES takes in over 4,000 animals a year from the Hamilton County area and boasts a 94% live release rate as an open-admissions shelter. The organization provides care for homeless animals, adoptions, animal services, volunteer opportunities, foster home support, pet food assistance, trap/neuter release for community cats, and humane education. 

As a 501(c)3 organization, HES relies on generous public support and is seeking a driven and strategic people-person to connect donors to our mission. The ideal candidate has a passion for animal welfare and inspires that passion in others.

JOB SUMMARY

The Director of Development is responsible for planning, organizing and executing the organization’s fundraising activities including major gifts program, special events, planned giving, and other initiatives. This position reports to the Executive Director and works closely with HES leadership, the Board of Directors, and volunteers.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work collaboratively across departments to cultivate a positive team approach to the mission of HES
  • Work with the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and management team to develop and reach organizational goals
  • Identify, develop, and manage fundraising initiatives in accordance with priorities of HES
  • Meet annual activity and financial performance metrics
  • Prepare reports on a regular basis for Executive Director and Board of Directors
  • Establish fundraising strategies that focus on engaging existing donors, qualifying prospective donors, engaging new prospects, cultivating planned giving, and executing stewardship plans
  • Ensure regular contact and maintain active portfolio with donors through various activities/communications, especially face-to-face meetings
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with HES corporate and foundation partners
  • Identify and research prospective grantors and prepare related proposals and reports
  • Manage schedule for direct mail and stewardship efforts
  • Approve external communications including press releases and newsletters
  • Oversee fundraising events, third-party fundraisers, and other opportunities that arise
  • Identify, organize, and direct the efforts of involved staff and volunteers as needed and assigned
  • Maintain detailed and complete records of fundraising activities and donors, ensure those activities are tracked properly in the CRM and documentation for bookkeeping
  • Act as a spokesperson for HES, as requested
  • Demonstrate ability to solve problems, overcome hurdles, and navigate sensitive issues with discretion, tact, and strong communication skills
  • Develop and maintain productive relationships with HES staff, board members, and volunteers to support fundraising initiatives
  • Ensure compliance with relevant laws and compliance with ethical standards

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS 

Bachelor’s Degree

​Minimum of five years of related experience with demonstrated fundraising success

​Experience with donor/customer management software

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Deep knowledge of fundraising tools and techniques
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent planning, analytical, and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated work ethic
  • Open-minded, collaborative attitude

  • Commitment to animal welfare mission of HES
  • Proficient in CRM software, Excel, Word, Outlook, Powerpoint
  • Superior interpersonal skills, especially the ability to work effectively in a complex organization
  • Experience with major gifts and strategic planning
  • Ability to articulate values and fundraising goals of HES to the public
  • Ability to consistently meet deadlines in a professional manner
