Description

The Support Line Specialist is responsible for delivering services to clients to fulfill the mission of the Barbells for Boobs Support Line. Part-Time (Non-Exempt), Hours: 11AM-3PM or 10AM-2PM (Flexibility Preferred). Reports to Support Line Manager.


The Support Line Specialist is fully versed in the Barbells for Boobs mission and is knowledgeable about the medical and psychosocial aspects of people with breast health concerns.


Requirements, Education and Skills

A bachelor’s degree, preferably in social work, human services, or psychology is required. A minimum of 1 – 3 years of related experience in human services, nonprofit, breast cancer or medical related field required, experience in a women’s health focus environment preferred. Knowledge of the affordable care act (ACA) and an understanding of New York – city, state and federal – programs and eligibility requirements a plus. Knowledge of breast cancer risks, facts and symptoms also a plus. Additional skills required include, but are not limited to:


  • Ability to actively listen and respond to a client in need
  • Strong communication skills with special populations and breast health service providers
  • Understanding of and respect for traditions, values and/or lifestyles of different cultural groups
  • A positive commitment and ability to work with diverse educational and cultural backgrounds
  • Effective problem solving skills and decision making
  • Strong organization and time management skills
  • Strong writing, speaking and interpersonal skills
  • Computer skills and proficiency (Microsoft office, data entry, databases, Google, etc.)
  • Bilingual (English and Spanish) Preferred


Responsibilities


  • Actively listens and supports Support Line clients to assess their needs and provide appropriate support, resources and services
  • Responds to each client in a professional and non-judgmental manner
  • Provides accurate information enabling client to connect with local resources and services, including resources necessary to “Get Screened”
  • Demonstrates sensitivity, empathy and compassion regarding a woman or man and their breast concern, need or support request
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently
  • Assist client in navigating through the healthcare system and advocates for client, when appropriate
  • Ability to research and locate free and low-cost screening services for clients
  • Ability to establish rapport with client and maintain a professional demeanor and mature attitude throughout client/worker interactions
  • Completes client intake form and collects accurate client information in database
  • Conducts systematic follow-up with clients based on the timing of their appointment scheduled with a provider to complete status of diagnosis; provides resources and referrals to CancerCare and other related services if a client is diagnosed with breast cancer
  • Maintains understanding of the most current healthcare and government programs
  • Provides general information on breast-health related topics from evidence based sources
  • Reviews emails, announcements, resources books, manuals and directories
  • Adheres to organizational policies and procedures for CancerCare and Barbells for Boobs
  • Participates in local Barbells for Boobs events and fundraising activities representing the Support Line program
  • Demonstrates an ability to work cooperatively with staff, colleagues and external stakeholders
  • Performs clerical duties including retrieving and answering voicemails
