Overview: IslandWood’s Communications and External Affairs team is seeking a results-driven Digital Media Specialist for an eight-month, part-time position (30 hours per week). This position will create and execute digital strategies that engage and grow IslandWood’s audiences and inspire action. The Digital Media Specialist will manage the day-to-day aspects of IslandWood’s social media channels, Google AdWords account, IslandWood’s website, and email campaigns; prepare monthly reports to analyze results and refine approaches; write social and ad copy; create and manage digital advertising; engage with key social audiences; develop and implement drip email campaign strategies; publish and edit website content; and other communications functions as required.

Reports to: Communications Manager


Social Media

• With the Communications Manager, develop social media strategies that engage, activate, and grow audiences

• Create and post content across IslandWood’s social media channels

• Monitor relevant accounts and hashtags; respond, engage, and share third-party content as appropriate

• Generate content that helps support the goals of IslandWood’s different teams

• Create social media campaigns and generate new content (video, photography, copy) for specific initiatives

• Basic photo editing and resizing


• Edit, proof, and publish blogs on the IslandWood website

• Promote blogs across social channels

• Repurpose blog content for other digital content needs


• Publish and edit website content

• Create and monitor conversion tracking in Google Analytics

• Create and generate reports in Google Analytics to track and measure the effectiveness of digital media efforts

Google AdWords

• Create and monitor Google for Nonprofits AdWords campaigns

• Draft content and select search terms for new ad campaigns

• Create and generate reports to track effectiveness and refine ads


• Build and coordinate the testing and sending of all external email

• With the Communications Manager, develop automated email campaign strategies

• Create and generate reports to track effectiveness and refine strategies



• Excellent judgement

• Demonstrated knowledge of digital marketing and communications best practices, particularly in a nonprofit context

• Exceptional written communication skills, attention to detail, and grammar

• Demonstrated skills to think critically and strategically and independently problem solve

• Data driven with proven experience using analytics to make decisions and improve results

• Highly efficient, with the ability to prioritize and execute multiple projects under demanding deadlines

• Proven ability to self-teach, develop expertise, and stay on top of trends in the complicated and ever-changing field of digital media marketing.

• Experience working across internal teams to accomplish tasks and meet goals

• Demonstrated understanding of online writing and communication strategies including experience developing copy for websites, digital advertising, blogs and social media

• Working knowledge of Google Analytics and Ad Words, and social media advertising

• Genuine commitment to cultural capacity growth both personally and professionally

• Must pass child safety screening

• Must comply with and maintain a smoke-free and drug-free work environment


• Passion for education, equity, and the environment

• Prior experience with Wordpress, and photo and video editing tools
