Women for Afghan Women (WAW) is a grassroots, civil society organization dedicated to securing and protecting the rights of disenfranchised Afghan women and girls in Afghanistan and New York, particularly their rights to develop their individual potential, to self-determination, and to be represented in all areas of life: political, social, cultural, and economic. WAW advocates for women’s rights and challenges the norms that underpin gender-based violence wherever opportunities arise to influence attitudes and bring about change.

WAW is looking for a Boys Leadership Team Leader who is passionate about youth development. The Team Leader serves as a mentor and role model for the youth participants enrolled in the Boys Leadership Program (ages 10-15) and the Youth Rising--Boys Program (ages 16-20) held at WAW’s New York Community Center (NYCC). Participants are either first-generation Muslim Americans or recently arrived immigrants. The programs ensure that participants have a safe space to convene and openly discuss issues that pertain to them, such as college readiness, career development, culture, religion, women’s rights, and gender-based violence. Additionally, the programs develop participants’ skills in leadership, communication, and critical thinking.

The Team Leader, with supervision from the Program Coordinator, will be responsible for developing and implementing a curriculum that creatively instructs young men about gender equality, advocacy, college advisement, self-empowerment, and leadership. The Team Leader will also be responsible for coordinating with partner organizations in bringing guest speakers to lead some sessions.

This is a part-time position paying $25.00 an hour.

Time commitment:

●       Fall and Spring: Saturdays from 11:00 am – 4:00 pm

●       Summer: One month (July or August) -- 3 days/week; 4 hours/day

Location: Sessions will be on Zoom until further notice (Office Location: 71-19 162nd Street, Unit CF-D, Fresh Meadows, NY 11365)

Qualifications:

●       1 or more years of experience working with youth in a non-academic setting

●       Ability to connect and actively listen to tweens and teens

●       Ability to create a safe, respectful, positive, fun, and welcoming environment by modeling professionalism and utilizing positive reinforcement

●       Excellent communication skills to guide and motivate participants

●       Excellent leadership, interpersonal and organizational skills

●       Proficiency in curriculum development desired but not required

●       Knowledgeable about the U.S. education system

●       Computer literate (not limited to Zoom, PowerPoint, Excel, Google Workspace)

●       Ability to work collaboratively with other staff members

●       Preferably a college student or a recent college graduate
