Position Summary

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Trinity Church in the City of Boston (the Parish) directs and manages the Parish’s administrative and financial systems, including accounting, investment, insurance, human resources, information technology, audit and legal affairs. The CFO has the primary responsibility for assisting and supporting the Rector in optimizing Trinity’s operating and financial performance and achieving its related goals. The CFO, subject to and in collaboration with the lay Treasurer (an elected office of the Parish), Finance Committee, Investment Committee, and Vestry, supports investment portfolio operations and, as needed, liaises with Trinity’s outside investment portfolio advisors.

Reporting Relationships

The Chief Financial Officer reports directly to the Rector and serves as the supervisor for the Accounts Manager; Senior Accountant; Staff Accountant; Stewardship Associate; and Technology Manager; and Retail Manager. The CFO collaborates with the administrative staff of Trinity Church’s partner organization, Trinity Boston Connects (TBC), in support of TBC’s financial and operational needs. The CFO reports the Parish’s financial condition to the Treasurer, Finance Committee, and Vestry. Seasonally, the CFO leads the budget-development process and supports the Parish’s annual Stewardship program, liaising with the Stewardship Committee. The CFO serves as a member of the Rector’s Office, participating in the Rector’s Office Meetings (ROM), as well as regular Staff Meetings.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Chief Financial Officer’s primary responsibilities include directing and managing the Parish’s administrative affairs and operations; contributing to the development and implementation of policy; ensuring policy and legal compliance of human-resource functions, including the recruitment, hiring, training, and exiting of staff members, as well as benefits administration and oversight; collaborating with the Rector and Parish leadership in the development of a strategic plan and monitoring progress compared with its objectives and goals; overseeing the Parish’s retail ministries; managing relationships with key business partners, including diocesan, banking, lending, investment, historical/preservation, architectural, contracting, and municipal institutions; and leading the development of operating and capital budgets and related performance reporting.

The Chief Financial Officer works collaboratively with and supports the Rector, Treasurer, Finance Committee, and Vestry with regular updates on the status of the Parish’s financial and business operations, as well as administrative and legal matters. The CFO establishes performance reporting systems, monitoring and reporting on performance compared to goals.
