The Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation (BNYDC) is the not-for-profit corporation that serves as the real estate developer and property manager of the Yard on behalf of its owner, The City of New York (the “City”). BNYDC constantly strives to provide an environment in which businesses and careers can take root and grow. 

BNYDC’s mission is to fuel New York City’s economic vitality by creating and preserving quality jobs, growing the City’s modern industrial sector and its businesses, and connecting the local community with the economic opportunity and resources of the Yard.

Areas of Responsibility 

The Director, Workforce Development Initiatives will lead the launch of the Brooklyn STEAM Center, an innovative hub for training high school students in high demand fields. This includes convening industry professionals and employers, identifying and implementing work-based student experiences, and managing the BNYDC partnership with the NYCDOE. 

In this role, the Director will build sustained relationships with Yard businesses to curate participation in the STEAM Center Advisory Council and to identify opportunities for student internships, tours, shadowing, projects and other work-based learning opportunities. The Director will also work closely with the NYCDOE, and other partners as developed, to ensure that programs are providing the targeted training and development for participants that results in preparation for work. 

Additionally, the Director will spearhead all additional programs at the Brooklyn Navy Yard that seek to prepare local community members with the technical and professional skills to pursue high quality career pathways at the Yard. This includes overseeing the existing BNYDC internship programs and other work-based learning opportunities, and conceiving of and launching new programming.

Responsibilities include, but will not be limited to:


  • Design, plan, implement, and evaluate workforce programs, including a high quality work based learning program, internship programs, and future workforce programs defined with BNYDC leadership 
  • Lead team to achieve defined targets for all programs, including internship placements and work-based learning experiences
  • Create documents codifying all workforce programs  
  • Project Management 
  • Work with organizational leadership to set goals for workforce pipeline and training programs, and work-based learning experiences 
  • Act as the public face of workforce pipeline and training programs, including representing BNYDC at public events and interfacing with community leaders and elected officials. 
  • Through all modes of communication, compellingly communicate about the Brooklyn STEAM Center and other workforce training initiatives 
  • Develop external materials that reflect our programs’ vision, goals and achievements 
  • Support External Affairs team to identify and apply for funding related to workforce training programs 


  • Develop and coordinate partnerships with the NYC Department of Education, Brooklyn STEAM Center staff, and other key higher education and training partners
  • Identify and secure resources and partnerships to enhance the STEAM Center program and internship programs
  • Develop partnerships for development of additional programs

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Commitment and alignment to the vision of the Brooklyn Navy Yard, and a passion for talent development 
  • Track record of initiating, building, and managing institutional partnerships for long-term collaboration
  • Experience designing, implementing, managing, and evaluating programs, ideally focused on training, education, or workforce development 
  • Ability to build relationships with a diverse set of employers, program participants, and partners, and with senior-level leaders 
  • Excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills 
  • Strong project management and organizational skills, with an ability to manage tasks and deliverables across multiple concurrent projects and organize time and priorities. 
  • Ability to track and analyze data 
  • Ability to adapt quickly to new information and respond to opportunities in a fast-paced environment 
  • High level of integrity, accountability, and judgment


  • Bachelor’s degree required, master’s preferred 
  • At least 4 years of relevant work experience in education, training, or workforce development
