Position Overview

Under the guidance and supervision of the Director of Grassroots and Community Programs, and in collaboration with other members of the Secular Coalition staff, the Grassroots Coordinator will execute strategies to maximize the engagement of grassroots and community leaders and volunteers in federal, state, and local advocacy activities in support of the Secular Coalition's grassroots and community programs and strategic priorities.


• Work closely with the Executive Director, Director of Grassroots and Community Programs, and the Director of Congressional Affairs in developing a strategic advocacy plan to implement the Secular Coalition's policy agenda (at both the state and Federal levels);

• In collaboration with Directors of Grassroots and Community Programs and Congressional Affairs, develop and execute strategies to increase the quantity, quality, and impact of SCA grassroots advocacy activities;

• Track state legislation and issue state Action Alerts and assist in issuing Federal action alerts;

• Assist with event planning, including coordination of grassroots and community component for events, including the Secular Coalition's annual Lobby Day;

• Work with Communications Associate to design and post strategic social media content and advertisements to support various advocacy campaigns and community programs;

• Assist with external communications to grassroots and community leaders; 

• Provide direct assistance to constituents participating in advocacy programs, including preparing constituents for meetings in their states/districts and work with SCA policy staff to seamlessly integrate grassroots advocacy with congressional lobbying;

• Provide direct assistance to community leaders participating in community programs;

• Assist with volunteer recruitment efforts;

• Vet, manage, and respond to incoming volunteer applications;

• Issue town hall alerts to Rapid Response Network;

• Collaborate and liaise with grassroots and community coordinators within the Secular Coalition's Member Organizations and partner organizations;

• Assist with maintenance of grassroots database and websites; 

• Assist with development and distribution of both new and existing resources for grassroots and community leaders and produce new resources, including toolkits, webinars and other training materials, reports, policy briefs, factsheets and talking points;

• Represent the Secular Coalition at outreach events as needed, including as an exhibitor and a presenter;

• Work with SCA Member Organizations to compile personal stories that help illustrate SCA and our Member Organizations' policy priorities in a compelling way;

• Track, manage, and distribute inventory of outreach materials, including tabling supplies and swag (buttons, stickers, and other branded giveaways); and

• Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

• Self-starter with an entrepreneurial character and ability to work independently; 

• Willingness and ability to adapt in a demanding, fast-paced, and dynamic work environment;

• Working knowledge of grassroots advocacy techniques, trends, and tools;

• Excellent project management and organizational skills with a strong attention to detail; 

• Ability to think critically and problem-solve;

• Excellent writing, verbal, and interpersonal skills;

• Positive teamwork skills;

• Proficiency with Google applications and Microsoft Office Suite - Word, PowerPoint, and Excel; 

• Experience with the use of social media platforms for advocacy campaigns;

• Bilingual in Spanish a plus, but not required; 

• Graphic design skills a plus, but not required; 

• Bachelor's degree or relevant comparable experience; and

• Experience in grassroots advocacy campaign or fundraising and knowledge of effective grassroots advocacy techniques is strongly preferred.
