The Urban Youth Collaborative (UYC) is a youth-led coalition of grassroots community organizations fighting for educational and racial justice. UYC brings youth leaders from across New York City together to design and win campaigns to improve our public schools and provides them a platform from which to help lead allied efforts to reform public education in our city. Our members are Make the Road New York, Sistas & Brothas United, Future of Tomorrow and the Rockaway Youth Task Force.

Scope of Responsibilities

Research and Policy

●  Conduct legal, policy, and data research and analysis to support the development of UYC campaigns

●  Draft internal and external memos, one pagers, and white papers for campaign demands and policy proposals

●   Review and synthesize external policy proposals related to our campaigns

●    Liaison with external partners and coalitions to build alignment or collaboration on reports, research, and or policy endorsement

Training and leadership development:

●   Support the Coalition Coordinator to design and implement our annual week-long Youth Organizing Institute, with support from member organizations and partner organizations

●   Support the Coalition Coordinator to strengthen our program of local workshops, alongside youth leaders, and support delivery of these workshops locally

●  Support the Coalition Coordinator to support youth and member organizations in planning and facilitating coalition meetings, trainings, and retreats

Operations and Administrative

●   Responsible for coordinating the logistical tasks for meetings, retreats, actions, and events

●   Maintain organizational calendar and communicate updates with member organizations

●  Provide quarterly updates of organizational revenue and expenses

Qualifications & Skills:

  • A passion for education reform and racial equity, and a commitment to youth organizing.
  • Proven ability to work well with young people and support their leadership.
  • At least four years experience working with advocacy or community organizations on social justice.
  • Strong planning and meeting/workshop facilitation skills.
  • Strong team-building and organizing skills.
  • Excellent writing, research, and communications skills. 
  • Ability to communicate complex issues clearly to a variety of audiences.
  • Experience in developing successful political, legislative or public education campaigns.  
  • Experience with grant writing and financial management.
  • Good teamwork skills
  • J.D. a plus
