NAMI Illinois is the statewide organization of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the nation’s largest grassroots network working to support people and families with mental health concerns. Each year, NAMI Illinois and its 20 local affiliates to provide education, advocacy, peer-led programs and other support services to over 50,000 Illinoisans. NAMI Illinois provides training to volunteer facilitators, coordinates statewide advocacy and public awareness, directly provides education programs, and leads strategic initiatives to advance equity.

To meet the growing needs of our state, NAMI Illinois is recruiting a Community Engagement Manager to advance its agenda for mental health excellence, equity, and inclusion. The Community Engagement Manager is a full-time position that reports directly to the Executive Director, and is expected to play a critical role in the growth of this essential organization. Core responsibilities will include developing and managing the NAMI Illinois Helpdesk function, supporting and incubating local NAMI affiliates, strengthening internal systems for measurement and program delivery, and collaborating with teammates and external stakeholders to address on critical mental health issues

Competitive candidates will bring a bachelor's degree and minimum of 3 years of work experience in a mental health, not-for-profit, or otherwise relevant position. A working knowledge of the Illinois mental health landscape, strong customer service orientation, current business technology skills, and a sincere appreciation for the issues faced by individuals and families who live with mental health concerns are essential.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Develop and manage customer service and intake protocols to help constituent access information, service referrals, educational programs, and other mental health resources.
  • Research, organize and map mental health resources to provide direct support to individuals and organizations that contact NAMI Illinois for information, access to NAMI programs, and referrals to address their mental health concerns.
  • Strengthen operational systems related to the Helpdesk function, including taking responsibility for training staff and volunteers on standard procedures for participant engagement, referrals, data collection and outcome measurement.
  • Represent the agency in external networks and coalitions working on essential mental health issues, as assigned.
  • Serve as lead data manager, providing program data and analysis for informational materials, legislative updates, web content, documentation, reports, and internal documents, as assigned.
  • Collaborate with other agency staff, leaders, and partners to support and expand our network of NAMI affiliates and allies across the state of Illinois.
  • Maintain organized files and execute office policies & procedures. Maintain shared calendars, participant lists, and data systems to support agency programs.

Qualifications:

Competitive candidates will bring a passion for NAMI Illinois' statewide mission; a sound understanding of the Illinois mental health landscape; outstanding analytic and organizational skills; the cultural competency and communications ability to engage diverse stakeholders, and the technological fluency to drive success in a rapidly-evolving, and largely virtual operation.

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 3 years of professional experience, ideally in mental health, non-profit, or other mission-driven organizations.
  • Knowledge of Illinois mental health systems is required. Professional education and/or certification in a mental health or health related field highly preferred.
  • Strong organizational ability, with proven time management, planning, project management, and problem-solving abilities. Supervisory and volunteer management experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated competency in business technology, including Microsoft Office 365; CRM and data systems; and cloud-based productivity tools such as Asana, Slack, or Teams.
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills; backed by the intellectual curiosity, sensitivity, and cultural competency to engage diverse stakeholders.
  • Customer-oriented approach, including discretion and confidentiality in interacting with consumers, family members, and other participants. HIPAA training helpful.
  • Bilingual candidates with proficiency in Spanish or other major language preferred.
