You are a true believer in the power of storytelling, public relations, communications, and marketing to change hearts and minds, which in turn, change the laws and policies that affect people’s lives. You’re ready to roll up your sleeves and put your exceptional writing and project management skills to work.

What You’ll Do:

The Communications Manager will play a key role in engaging, cultivating, and growing the audiences for our work. You will work with staff across the organization to develop content related to Tahirih programs, initiatives, projects, and events for use across a range of distribution channels and to many audiences. The position will report to the Director of Communications and will play a key role in advancing efforts to position Tahirih as a leading voice and expert on issues relating to immigration, asylum, and gender-based violence.


Essential Job Functions:

  • Create, manage, and distribute compelling content that reflects the Tahirih voice and is consistent with the organization’s messaging and brand guidelines.
  • Develop and successfully manage project timelines and action plans to drive key communications projects to completion.
  • Effectively influence and contribute to a communications strategy for the organization that drives growth and engagement across communications channels.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement an integrated, multichannel content strategy and content calendar that supports broader policy, program, communications, and fundraising objectives.
  • Create, curate, and distribute content that effectively and compellingly communicates Tahirih’s work to key audiences, helping to meet outreach, marketing, and fundraising goals.
  • Support Tahirih’s program and policy initiatives by drafting, editing, and/or proofreading copy for a variety of communications projects, including email campaigns, direct mailings, web posts, blogs, newsletters, fact sheets, reports, op-eds, etc
  • Own the editorial process to ensure all content reflects Tahirih’s voice, is consistent with Tahirih messaging, writing and visual guidelines, and meets high standards of quality.
  • Manage content creation processes from idea to execution, ensuring all internal and external deadlines are met, key stakeholders contribute meaningfully and adhere to timelines, and that the final product meets a high standard of excellence.
  • Manage the production of print and digital communications projects, including brochures, reports, email campaigns, direct mailings, etc., and coordinate with outside vendors when applicable.
  • Work with data managers to maintain and review analytics; shift content strategy as needed to meet goals and ensure Tahirih’s content strategy reflects relevant best practices.
  • Mentor and supervise Communications staff and volunteers.

Qualifications:

A successful Communications Manager will quickly learn and embody Tahirih’s voice, and create content that is survivor- and client-centered, trauma-informed, and reflects Tahirih’s values around diversity, equity, and inclusion. They must have strong writing and editing skills and have excellent project management skills. Although familiarity with issues related immigration, asylum, and gender-based violence is preferred, the ability to translate complex policy ideas to broader, non-policy audiences is critical. Other key qualifications include:

  • Deep understanding and analysis of racism and oppression, and a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Ability to quickly learn and embody an organization’s voice and write in that voice in different formats for different audiences.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills.
  • Excellent project management skills; Ability to manage multiple projects under strict and sometimes competing deadlines;
  • Solutions-oriented, with an eagle-eye attention to detail.
  • Ability to work well independently and can demonstrate sound judgement and good instincts without heavy management/guidance.
  • Nimble, someone who can think strategically at a high level while also being able to be “in the weeds” at the same time.
  • Highly collaborative; strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with the ability to work in and across teams.
  • Experience with Luminate Online or similar email distribution program highly preferred.
  • At least five years of increasing content creation and project management responsibilities preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of HTML preferred.

Location: We have a strong preference for candidates who can be based out of our Falls Church, VA office. We will also consider candidates who can be based out of one of our office locations in the San Francisco Bay Area, Houston (TX), Atlanta (GA), and Baltimore (MD). Occasional travel (about 10%) throughout the United States may be required.
