Recycling Champions Program Information
Since 2010, GrowNYC’s Recycling Champions Program (RCP) has developed model recycling programs and designed unique and engaging educational materials for use at public schools throughout NYC. Working in partnership with the NYC Department of Education (DOE) Office of Sustainability, and the NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) Bureau of Recycling and Sustainability, RCP carries out the student and faculty education and outreach arm of the Zero Waste Schools Program.
One of the key elements of Mayor de Blasio’s OneNYC is a goal to divert 90% of the City’s solid waste from landfill by 2030 and to increase recycling in NYC public schools. Continuing into the 2018-19 academic year, the Zero Waste Schools Program focuses on developing best practices in school waste reduction for use citywide. This program highlights the tremendous opportunity to reduce landfill waste from schools, which generate more than 40,000 tons of refuse per year.
Outreach Coordinator Responsibilities
GrowNYC is seeking an Outreach Coordinator with the Recycling Champions Program, who is highly motivated, organized and passionate about improving NYC’s environment through its partner schools located in upper Manhattan, Harlem and the Bronx. The Outreach Coordinator should be comfortable engaging a diverse group of school stakeholders including administration, faculty, custodial staff, and students. As a member of the program team, the outreach coordinator will perform essential outreach strategies including: facilitating faculty professional development sessions; conducting waste audits; explaining the environmental and economic benefits of recycling and organics collection; and educating students and staff about NYC’s recycling regulations and goals and how they apply to school communities. The Outreach Coordinator will also work with school staff to engage students in recycling activities through the creation of Green Teams and recycling monitoring groups and will further education by facilitating Pre-K-12 classroom workshops, assemblies, and other events. They will develop age-appropriate lesson plans and materials for school partners that align with school and student needs as well as Common Core and NGSS standards.
The Outreach Coordinator will work cooperatively with the RCP program team, as well as other GrowNYC programs and staff. In order to achieve these goals, they will be provided a comprehensive training on best practices for organizing recycling programs at schools, delivering classroom/auditorium lessons, and shadowing opportunities to prepare for engaging with school stakeholders on waste issues.
