Summary:

The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) seeks a Social Media Specialist to join the Communications and Public Affairs team. The successful candidate will support the promotion of IFPRI and its research through online and social media by creating and publishing compelling content for digital platforms from research material and generating innovative approaches for growing IFPRI’s online content and engagement on social media platforms. The primary goal of this position is to continue to grow IFPRI’s well-established presence and engagement online both quantitatively and qualitatively, particularly on social media.

The successful candidate must be able to translate academic research content into compelling written and visual stories in short formats appropriate for online and social media platforms, such as blog posts, press releases, video interviews, data visualizations and graphics, interactives, and social media cards. Good writing and storytelling skills are a must.

The successful candidate should have experience in creating and sharing compelling online content from dense, academic work and reports, as well as in managing content on institutional social media accounts for the major social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram etc.).

The Social Media Specialist works under the direction of the Manager of Media Engagement to identify opportunities to promote IFPRI research and researchers through online and social media platforms. S/he will work closely with the media and visual design teams to create compelling verbal and visual products based on IFPRI work that is customized for various online media platforms. The individual also creates periodic analytics reports to share information on the performance of IFPRI content on online media platforms.

Additional responsibilities may include writing blogposts, op-eds, and press releases based on IFPRI research.

This is a full time exempt, one-year, renewable appointment. This position is based at IFPRI headquarters in Washington, DC. The Social Media Specialist reports to the Manager of Media Engagement.

 

Essential Duties:

The Social Media Specialist will:

  • Work with the media and visual design teams to create compelling visual and written content for online and social media platforms based on IFPRI work and events, taking advantage of new and emerging features and platforms for sharing content.
  • Coordinate the posting of content to IFPRI’s various social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn, to grow IFPRI’s profile on these social media platforms both quantitatively and qualitatively.
  • Encourage audience engagement through social media platforms for livestreamed IFPRI Policy Seminars and other high-level events featuring IFPRI researchers.
  • Maintain a monthly social media editorial calendar; undertake social media listening/monitoring
  • Create social media toolkits for key IFPRI events and outputs.
  • Actively cultivate relationships on social media channels with IFPRI colleagues based internationally and partners to build a network for amplifying IFPRI content and the relevant work of our partners.
  • Collect, analyze, and share reports on social media metrics for key IFPRI products, events, and campaigns.
  • Work closely with media team to share information, plan for upcoming media events, and craft stories from research in a variety of mediums.
  • Work closely with IFPRI’s research divisions to ensure their work is represented accurately and appropriately on social media, and that their own engagement on social media platforms is supported.
  • Stay up-to-date with changes in all social platforms where IFPRI has presence ensuring maximum effectiveness. 

Additional Duties:

  • Assist with writing media outreach materials such as press releases, opinion articles, blog posts, and other content.
  • Any other duties as assigned 

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, Economics, Environmental Science, and two years of relevant professional experience or Master’s degree in a relevant discipline. 
  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills. Demonstrated ability to write clean, concise, engaging copy of highest quality on deadline, in formats including press releases, blog posts, stories, and social media posts.
  • Comfort with social media tools and working within the fast-paced environment of social media
  • Ability to communicate complex research results in a concise and engaging fashion (orally, verbally, visually) across a variety of platforms including blogs, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and others.
  • Ability to format content tailored to specialized platforms and formats.
  • Ability to work under pressure and within teams.
  • Ability to work independently and in interdisciplinary and multicultural teams.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • International experience, particularly in developing countries.
  • Experience in international development
  • Experience working with scientific or academic content
