TITLE: Senior Specialist, Materials

STATUS: Full-time, exempt, temporary-to-hire

REPORTS TO: Associate Director, Materials

LOCATION: Seattle, WA

The International Living Future Institute (ILFI), a dynamic and solutions-oriented non-profit, seeks an exceptional materials specialist to provide technical guidance for Declare, the Living Product Challenge, and ILFI building certifications. ILFI’s mission is to lead and support the transformation toward communities that are socially just, culturally rich and ecologically restorative. The successful candidate must exhibit a strong passion for the organization’s mission.

Part of ILFI’s technical program team, the Materials Senior Specialist will play a key role in maintaining the rigor and technical excellence of ILFI’s product label and certification programs, Declare and the Living Product Challenge. Responsibilities will include developing program resources, fielding technical customer questions, maintaining current knowledge of industry trends, and serving as a subject matter expert on materials across all ILFI programs, including the Living Building Challenge and Living Community Challenge.

The successful candidate will be highly organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable working independently with minimal supervision as well as making key decisions that contribute to program success and impact.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

  • Serve as a subject matter expert and ensure technical consistency for all ILFI programs and initiatives related to materials
  • Develop key technical resources and educational content for Declare and the Living Product Challenge
  • Quickly address customer questions related to technical program requirements and clarifications
  • Track industry trends, initiatives, and resources, and participate in external working groups to ensure rigor, relevance, and integrity of ILFI programs 
  • Contribute to the delivery of technical services contracts and grants, as needed
  • Stay current on ILFI’s full suite of programs and initiatives

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, material science, or field complementary to job duties and/or mission of the organization.
  • At least 2 years of experience with toxicology, chemistry, material science, product development, supply chain consulting or a related field.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of green product issues, trends, and certification programs.
  • Excellent communication skills. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a variety of stakeholders representing different organizations, backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Proven organizational and time management skills.
  • Computer skills, especially Mac OS, Powerpoint, Word, and Excel.

Desired:

  • Living Future Accreditation and/or LEED Accreditation. Candidates who are not already Living Future Accredited will be supported in achieving their LFA within one year.
  • Experience working across virtual teams and with remote management.
  • Creative problem solving skills.
  • Master’s degree in a field relevant to job duties.

ILFI offers a fast-paced, collaborative, team-oriented workplace that is mission driven. This job is full time, exempt, and requires a willingness to work a flexible schedule to accommodate after hours meetings and travel as needed. ILFI has offices in Seattle, WA, and Pittsburgh, PA as well as additional remote staff across the country. The role will begin as a 4-month temporary position, with strong potential to become a permanent position with full benefits dependent on success and funding. The salary range for this position is $52,000-55,000 annually.
