Director of Development and Communications (Washington, D.C.)

Reports to: Executive Director

United Palestinian Appeal (UPA) www.upaconnect.org, seeks an experienced non-profit professional to join our senior leadership team and oversee all aspects of donor messaging and engagement. The director of development and communications will drive the strategic vision for an integrated communications and fundraising strategy that will advance UPA’s mission, strengthen its visibility and deepen donor affinity.

The director will supervise and support the Development and Communications team, fostering a workplace culture of collaboration and excellence. The director will guide the development and production of all outward-facing publications, ensuring cohesion between fundraising themes and program strengths. The director will also oversee individual donor engagement, leading the department’s cultivation of major donors, the expansion of planned giving and workplace giving, and the exploration and implementation of new fundraising strategies, such as equity stock donations. Overall, the director is expected to ensure a meaningful experience for donors by matching their interests with UPA programs and emerging development needs.

Additionally, the director will provide tools and offer training to UPA staff, board members and advisory council to further accelerate fundraising and organizational positioning. Public events, conferences, and cultural and educational programs that contribute to the enhanced promotion of UPA will also be under the director’s purview. As an integral member of the senior leadership team, the director will coordinate closely with the Director of Field Operations, Director of New Business and the UPA Executive Director and will be responsible for providing executive leadership with reports that illuminate donation trends.

The best candidates will have:

1.      At least 10 years of experience with non-profit organizations, in the fields of donor development, fundraising, and communications/marketing.

2.      Undergraduate degree in a related field. An advanced degree is preferred.

3.      Familiarity with UPA’s history, mission, programs, and partners in the field.

4.      Extensive knowledge of humanitarian and advocacy organizations focusing on Palestine and Palestinians, both in the United States and internationally.

5.      Excellent planning and organizational skills. Event planning experience would be viewed favorably.

6.      Strong analytical skills with a track record of analytical experience.

7.      Proven leadership skills and ability to manage staff.

8.      Experience developing and managing work plans, as well as collaborating remotely.

9.      Superior speaking, writing, and editing skills in English. Familiarity with Arabic language and culture.

10.  Ability to effectively communicate the breadth of UPA programs and its values to internal and external stakeholders.

11.  Availability to travel for donor meetings, conferences, and educational programs.
