Vietnamese-Speaking Community Engager

Location: San José, California, or nearby city  

Type: Part-time, temporary position, early/mid March through June 30, 2021

As part of our Climate Smart Community Engagement project in partnership with the City of San José, Mothers Out Front is seeking a part-time Vietnamese-speaking Community Engager to conduct outreach to San Jose’s Vietnamese community, including facilitating and providing interpretation for online workshops and trainings in Vietnamese.

Mothers Out Front is a national nonprofit whose mission is to build the power of mothers to ensure a healthy environment today and a livable climate tomorrow for all children. We are forging a powerful, diverse, member-led movement of mothers, grandmothers, and caregivers dedicated to convincing decision-makers and community members to accelerate a complete and just transition away from toxic fossil fuels to clean, renewable energy. We also advocate for climate justice and resilience in our communities. We are a fast-growing organization with community teams and staff in eight states. Our local Mothers Out Front Silicon Valley chapter was named “2019 Climate Smart Champion of the Year” by the San José City Council. 

Job Responsibilities 

As our Vietnamese-speaking Community Engager, you will conduct outreach to San Jose’s Vietnamese residents. You will work closely with our Spanish-speaking Community Engager and our California Senior Organizer to develop and facilitate culturally appropriate virtual workshops in Vietnamese on how households can reduce their energy and grocery bills and improve their health while lowering their climate impact. You will also inform residents about the San José Climate Smart Challenge and provide Vietnamese interpretation for online trainings in advocacy skills to empower residents to influence public policy to address community needs.

Job activities may include tactics such as (but not limited to):

• Conduct outreach to Vietnamese community organizations, schools and households in the downtown and East Side of San José
• Participate in monthly online networking mixers with local community-based organizations
• Create effective social media posts in Vietnamese
• Facilitate culturally appropriate virtual events in Vietnamese to inform residents how to save money and improve health while lowering their climate impact and inspire them to join the Climate Smart Challenge
• Provide interpretation into Vietnamese at online trainings in advocacy skills. 

This role is ideal for you if you:

• Are fluent in Vietnamese and English (verbal and written) 
• Are an effective public speaker with the ability to inspire and support others to take action 
• Are passionate about climate justice and empowering mothers as community leaders
• Are skilled at working with people from a wide variety of ethnic, racial, socioeconomic, educational, linguistic and religious backgrounds, as well as people of various physical abilities, sexual orientations, gender identities, and generations
• Take initiative, are creative, and work well both independently and collaboratively
• Have strong project- and time-management skills and can be flexible when needed 
• Have an equity mindset and understand how to overcome barriers to civic engagement
• Have a growth mindset, welcome feedback, and engage in reflection and self-assessment 
• Have the ability to work from home and to work some evenings and weekends as needed
• Live in San José or a nearby city.  

Details:

This is a part-time (approximately 7-10 hours/week), temporary, grant-funded position that runs from early March through June 30, 2021. 

Pay: $24/hour. There are no benefits; however, we do offer flex time, training, and a dynamic, supportive, and collaborative setting—and we are proudly women-led! 

Reporting: This position reports to our California Senior Organizer who is based in San José.
