Summary

This is an exciting and unique opportunity to join a dynamic in-house legal team helping Save the Children achieve its mission while complying with applicable laws, regulations, and standards. Under the direction and supervision of the Deputy General Counsel and Chief Ethics Officer, you will provide legal advice to Save the Children and its affiliates on a broad range of matters and have primary responsibility for providing legal and business advice and support for Save the Children’s human resources needs. You will also partner closely with other divisions of Save the Children, guide and continuously improve designated compliance functions, and handling legal matters as they arise in a non-profit, mission driven, team environment. This generalist role will require the ability to learn new areas of the law quickly and to apply those learnings in complex settings.

What You’ll Be Doing (Essential Duties)

  • In consultation with the General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel, provide legal counsel on human resources and employee relations matters, including compliance with all applicable employment laws such as Title VII, FMLA, FLSA, ADA and other applicable federal and state laws, personnel policies and procedures, hiring practices, reasonable accommodations, termination and severance, and other issues as required (30%)
  • As directed by the General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel, advise on a broad range of 501(c)(4) matters at a state and federal level, including compliance with applicable lobbying laws, election-related issues, and compliance concerns applicable to affiliated entities (20%)
  • Work closely with staff attorneys to develop expertise in additional subject matter areas and perform duties including drafting, reviewing, negotiating and approving a variety of legal and commercial agreements; conducting investigations within the purview of the Legal & Risk Management Division; responding to legal inquiries; and assisting in the development and delivery of legal and compliance policies, processes, and training materials (40%)
  • Monitor legal developments relevant to tax exempt organizations and disseminate information to relevant staff (10%)

Required Qualifications

  • Applicants must be a graduate of an accredited law school with a J.D. and a current member of a bar with a valid license to practice law in a state or territory of the United States, District of Columbia, or Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, plus at least four (4) years of relevant experience, two (2) of which must be in the practice of law in a law firm, government agency, or in-house legal department.
  • Proven foundational experience in US employment law and substantive experience in at least one of the following legal areas: US government laws and regulations for tax exempt organizations; state and federal lobbying and campaign finance laws.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently identify legal issues and exposures and develop and articulate appropriate legal solutions
  • Professional proficiency in MS Office suite
  • Professional proficiency in spoken and written English
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate successfully with individuals and teams at all levels
  • Proven research and negotiating skills,
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering an environment of diversity, inclusion, and belonging

Preferred Qualifications

  • In-house legal experience at a nonprofit organization.

Salary

USD 100,000 - USD 110,000minimal flexibility above max plus bonus

We also have generous vacation leave and paid holidays including 2 floating holidays per year to be used at your discretion. Subject to approval each year are our “Summer Fun Friday’s” where our offices close on a half day to allow our employees to spend time with their families and enjoy the weather.

In addition, as of July 1, our Parental leave has been extended from 6 to 12 weeks at 100% paid allowing new mothers additional time off after the 6-8 weeks covered by short term disability as well as providing new fathers and foster/adoptive parents additional time off to welcome a new child into their lives.

In response to COVID 19, we also permanently changed our “Grandparent leave” to “Caregiver leave” which is completely separate from safety and wellness (), bereavement, and critical child illness leave. This additional two weeks of paid leave can be used to take care of any family member whether immediate or extended, or used to extend parental leave.
