Description

PURPOSE:  The Education Department of San Francisco Opera provides opera education opportunities for

adults, Kindergarten through University students, families and the community. The School Programs Manager oversees the administrative aspects of implementation of the Education department’s K-12 school programs including Professional Development; manages administrative staff, interns and volunteers; and collaborates with internal and external stakeholders. The Manager is co-managed by the Director of Education and the Senior Curriculum and Programs Manager.


EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university (preferred) or equivalent work experience.


EXPERIENCE: Minimum three years of arts administration experience (preferably in arts education)


PREREQUISITE SKILLS & REQUIREMENTS:


Knowledge of:

  • Opera and/or the performing arts (preferred)
  • School systems, Kindergarten – Grade 12 (preferred)
  • Bay Area arts education community, education institutions, and school systems (preferred)


Skill in:

  • Planning, organizing, and coordinating people and events
  • Microsoft Office (especially Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint)
  • Database systems (Tessitura preferred)
  • HTML


Ability to:

  • Communicate tactfully, professionally, effectively, and accurately both orally and in writing
  • Establish working relationships and interact in a professional manner with a wide range of people
  • Work independently and resourcefully to complete assigned tasks with minimal supervision; and work as a member of a team
  • Complete projects with a high degree of accuracy, detail, and timeliness; and handle multiple projects simultaneously by accurately setting priorities
  • Work occasional evenings and weekends
  • Must perform the functions of the position in a safe manner



ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:


  • Co-manages with the Senior Curriculum and Programs Manager, focusing on implementation and logistical aspects, a comprehensive opera education program for K-12 students and educators throughout the SF bay area, including all current programs (including the final dress rehearsal program), pilot programs (with a focus on the Jerry Rosenstein Arts Project), and future initiatives
  • Works in partnership with the Senior Curriculum and Programs Manager in designing professional development sessions, setting the Senior Manager’s plans into action, editing and formatting professional development and program curriculum materials. Occasionally leads or co-leads professional development
  • Manages School Programs Coordinator (advising the Coordinator on, but not managing, the ARIA Music Performance Residency program -- MPR), Interns and Volunteers
  • Manages the implementation and administrative aspects of the K-18 professional development (PD) for educator programs including Opera Club and Opera PDs including overseeing the production and distribution of K-18 educator materials
  • Manages the opera resources and partnerships of the K-12 school programs including serving as the liaison with other
  • Departments, i.e. Production staff, Dress Rehearsals; and between the Company and outside partners, i.e. Adler Fellows, SF Boys Chorus, SF Girls Chorus, Pacific Boychoir Academy, Young Women’s Choral Projects, SF Conservatory of Music
  • Leads recruitment and collaboration efforts with bay area K-12 schools, creating opportunities for teacher and student engagement and learning
  • Processes and evaluates applications for K-12 school programs
  • Manages implementation and collection of school program assessment tools (except for MPR)
  • Recruits, contracts and co-supervises a team of teaching artists for school based programs
  • Tracks and shares data of school-based programs, documenting participation for reporting and fundraising purposes
  • Oversees Education Department’s contact and event databases using Excel and Tessitura
  • Oversees the Department payroll including processing timesheets and documenting Teaching Artist hours; and submitting invoices to the Finance Department
  • Represents the Education Department on San Francisco Opera’s Social Media Team
  • Represents the San Francisco Opera in arts and education communities
