Position Overview

The American Civil Liberties Union Foundation of Georgia (ACLUF-GA) seeks to hire a full-time, Investigator/Paralegal. ACLUF-GA is the state affiliate of the national American Civil Liberties Union. Our mission is to preserve and expand the individual rights guaranteed in the U.S. Constitution, the Georgia Constitution, and related federal and state civil rights laws. 

The Investigator/Paralegal is a critical member of the Legal Department and directly contributes to the team’s efforts by providing litigation and advocacy support. The position is supervised by the Legal Director and the Staff Attorneys. He/she/they must pay assiduous attention to detail while working in a face-paced environment with multiple responsibilities. The successful Investigator/Paralegal will be a self-starter able to work both independently and collaboratively with diverse communities.

Responsibilities include basic clerical support, assisting in litigation (particularly by helping to format, proofread, organize, and file legal documents), conducting factual investigations including speaking with witnesses, meeting with potential clients, coordinating the legal intake process, and working collaboratively and effectively as a team member to ensure that administrative and paralegal needs are met.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

·        Ensure that administrative and paralegal needs are met for all staff attorneys

·        Assist in litigation (particularly by helping to format, proofread, organize, and file legal documents)

·        Conduct investigations as determined by staff attorneys, including meeting with potential clients or witnesses

·        Coordinate the legal intake process including supervising volunteers

     

Qualifications

·        Assiduous attention to detail;

·        Excellent proofreading skills;

·        Ability and willingness to learn and master new systems, procedures, and technological tools quickly;

·        Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs and Adobe Acrobat;

·        Ability to stay organized and manage a high-volume workload assigned by multiple staff attorneys;

·        Ability to work with and center historically marginalized or oppressed communities of different cultures and backgrounds. This includes having a mature understanding of how structural racism, sexism, and prejudice against all kinds of marginalized communities pervade our society;

·        Other duties may be assigned as needed;

·        Fluency in Spanish preferred but not required.
