About the Institute for Policy Studies (IPS)

IPS is a progressive think tank dedicated to building a more equitable, ecologically sustainable, and peaceful society. In partnership with dynamic social movements, we turn transformative policy ideas into action.

IPS values the well-being of our staff. We offer generous leave, excellent employer-paid benefits for employees and their dependents, 403b retirement plan available immediately upon hire, with employer match eligibility after two years, and flexible work hours. Our office is located in DuPont Circle in Washington DC, with sunny windows and a gym.

Title: Media Manager

Reports to: Deputy Director

Salary Range: $50,000-$54,000K

Position Overview:

IPS is looking for a media manager who’s passionate about putting progressive research, stories, and movements in the news. We want someone who’s always on the lookout for opportunities to contribute to — or change — big conversations in the media.

The ideal candidate is experienced at doing outreach to mainstream as well as progressive media, has existing contacts with journalists and producers, and keeps up on the news related to progressive issues and movements. IPS has a broad range of projects and experts, so knowledge about a range of issues is a huge plus — and strong time management skills, deadline orientation, and judgment are a must.

Working on our communications team under our Deputy Director and alongside our Editorial Manager, you’ll craft media pitches to promote our reports as well as rapid response analysis, serve as the primary press contact at IPS, and supervise two staffers: our Communications Assistant, who helps with media outreach and tracking, and our Newman Fellow, who runs our social media channels and does our graphic design.

The Institute for Policy Studies is a vibrant, multi-issue progressive think with strong ties to social movements. If you have the skills and passion to match our mission, we’d love to hear from you.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Creating and implementing strategies for amplifying IPS ideas, reports, and experts in print and broadcast media
  • Pitching stories to and building relationships with journalists and producers across core IPS issue areas
  • Planning and implementing media strategies for both planned and rapid response media opportunities
  • Lead planning on strategies using social media as a way to amplify IPS ideas in the media, with Newman Fellow
  • With editorial manager, assisting IPS issue experts with creating effective, newsworthy messages and talking points
  • Leading strategy on building and maintaining targeted press lists across core IPS issue areas, with communications assistant
  • Managing media tracking, with communications assistant
  • Writing press materials including releases, advisories, briefs, and statements
  • Collaborating with communications team on strategies to promote IPS content and issues to target audiences

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience pitching stories to journalists
  • Knowledge of and commitment to IPS issues
  • Organized, deadline-oriented, excellent time management, good judgement
  • Demonstrated effective writing and editing skills and experience writing press materials
  • Established relationships with progressive and mainstream media
  • A team player who is flexible, open to new ideas and strategies, and can work intergenerational
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with allies and partners on media strategy
  • A large and diverse daily media diet
  • Race-class-gender analysis

Preferred, but not required:

  • Background in journalism or public relations
  • Experience or ideas about getting lesser-known experts into media
  • Experience or ideas about raising IPS visibility and maintaining IPS brand
  • Experience supervising or managing others
  • Knowledge of current social media landscape and how to leverage it for media moments
